Alcatel-Lucent and P&TLuxembourg launch one of Europe’s fastest data networks

State-of-the-art 100G optical and 100GE IP network helps solidify Luxembourg’s role as a key hub for data centres, banking, government and content distribution in the region

Paris, September 16, 2011 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext and NYSE: ALU) and P&TLuxembourg, the nation’s leading telecommunications service provider, have launched one of the fastest data networks in Europe. The two companies established a superfast 100G (gigabit per second) IP connection between Frankfurt and Luxembourg, which provides very high-bandwidth, low latency, secure and reliable data services to the financial sector, European institutions and organizations as well as to all businesses and consumers throughout the country.

By supporting more robust, high-capacity links with other major business capitals, the enhanced and expanded network will help Luxembourg’s economy to secure its position as one of the leading data centre locations in Europe. It also will enable P&TLuxembourg to better support a wide variety of extremely time sensitive financial and business transactions and create interconnections between different IP networks, known as IP Peering, making it a more attractive location for e-commerce and content companies.

Carlo Richartz, senior engineer at P&T’s Telecom Division, said: “Luxembourg has today an important role in the international financial system. In addition, Luxembourg is evolving more and more as an essential player in the IT world and has become a major location for data centres, as well as Internet and multimedia content hosting and distribution. By introducing 100G transmission capacity into our TERALINK network – which already connects much of Western Europe – we are ensuring that Luxembourg remains a top tier Internet hub for all kinds of economic activity throughout Europe.”

To support these advanced capabilities, Alcatel-Lucent has provided P&TLuxembourg with its Converged Backbone Transformation (CBT) solution, a distinctive combination of IP and optical technologies that will help the operator to improve the performance, reliability and operational efficiency of its network, while reducing costs.

Stephen Carter, President, Europe, Middle East and Africa for Alcatel-Lucent, said: “In this period of economic uncertainty, it is more important than ever that European institutions and businesses have access to world-class data networks – the lifeblood of the global economy. This deployment of 100G/s technology puts  P&TLuxembourg in an ideal position to support  Luxembourg’s economic activity and collaboration throughout the region.  We are proud to play a part in strengthening the connections between European institutions of all kinds.”

The Converged Backbone Transformation Solution for P&TLuxembourg includes:

  • The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) with 100G optical coherent technology which takes advantage of unique Bell Labs silicon innovations to support 100G on each of the 88 wavelengths of an optical fibre. This represents a tremendous boost in network capacity and performance, providing enough bandwidth to support the streaming of more than 15,000 high-definition TV channels simultaneously on each wavelength
  • The Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router (SR) provides 100G Ethernet (100GE) interfaces that deliver highest speeds without compromising the service capabilities required for business, residential, mobile, or government users, as well as for IP peering. The 7750 SR was designed from inception to deliver high-performance, high availability routing with service-aware operations, administration, management, and provisioning. P&TLuxembourg has seamlessly expanded its existing 7750 SR platforms to support 100GE for IP peering and data centre interconnection traffic to key locations such as Frankfurt.

Together this combination provides P&TLuxembourg leading-edge 100G technology across both the IP and optical domains of their network, along with the flexibility to deliver any mix of 10G, 40G or 100G IP and transport services as required, all while improving total cost of ownership, reducing power consumption and simplifying operations.

The Converged Backbone Transformation (CBT) solution is a key element of the Alcatel-Lucent High Leverage Network™ (HLN) architecture, which is designed to cut transport costs and dramatically reduce operational complexity in core networks.
