Global Crossing Announces Government Certification for PSN Services

The Market Is Now Open for Public Sector Bodies Looking to Buy PSN and GCN Services

LONDON, Aug. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Global Crossing Limited (NASDAQ: GLBC), a leading global IP solutions provider, today announced that its subsidiary, Global Crossing (UK) Telecommunications Limited (GCUK) has received full Public Service Network (PSN) certification from the UK Cabinet Office for delivery of its Government Conveyance Network (GCN) and PSN Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IP-VPN) services to the Public Sector.

The services have been named as PSN compliant and are in line with the standards required for PSN, an initiative that is set to reduce public sector network costs 500 million pounds Sterling by 2013.

Under the terms of the PSN framework, all suppliers must comply with a common set of standards drawn up by the Cabinet Office to ensure streamlined, consistent levels of service across the public sector.  As part of this framework, all central government departments procuring IT contracts are now required to buy PSN compliant services, while all existing central government IT contracts will soon be reviewed to ensure they abide by the strict new standards put in place.  At a local government level, authorities will have the chance to convert existing networks to PSN compliant ones for the first time.

Global Crossing’s certification for both its GCN and PSN IP-VPN services recognises that its solutions meet the security requirements, open technical standards, and commercial compatibility required for PSN suppliers.  The company is now making its PSN-certified offering, which can deliver secure voice, IP and multimedia services at different security levels and for different users using the same connection, available to all organisations across the public sector.

“We’re extremely proud to be able to announce the certification of one of our leading solutions as part of our ongoing work with the UK Government,” said Jeff Parris, senior vice president, Public Sector Business Development, EMEA, at Global Crossing.  “Having supplied services to the UK Government for more than twenty years, we have worked with the PSN Programme since 2008 and are at the heart of its roll out across the UK.  We recognise the enormous impact the PSN will have on the government, civil servants and citizens alike, and are eager to see these benefits realised.”

Global Crossing’s IP-VPN service will be one of the first to achieve PSN compliance.  It enables the convergence of voice and data and can connect to any PSN certified application within the network.  Not only does this provide a high level of flexibility to meet the changing needs of the Public Sector, it also ensures highly sensitive data remains secure at all times.

Today’s announcement follows news last month that Global Crossing was named as one of only three suppliers in the Government Procurement Service, Managed Telecommunications Convergence Framework (MTCF).  The MTCF will facilitate the delivery of managed telephony and data network services and enable the public sector to benefit from access to a new portfolio of hosted IP telephony, unified communications and video conferencing services.  All services delivered within the framework will either be PSN-certified or will provide transition to PSN-certified services.
