ADTRAN Total Access 5000 Achieves Major Adoption Milestones

Revolutionary Platform Enables Service Providers to Reinvent Their Access Networks
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Jul 19, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

ADTRAN(R), Inc., (NASDAQ:ADTN, news, filings), a leading provider of next-generation networking solutions, today announced several key adoption milestones for the company's flagship product, the Total Access(R) 5000. The Total Access 5000 has claimed a prominent spot in network access with market share growth of 136 percent in 2010, the highest increase in the global market according to market research firm Infonetics. It is the only access and transport platform that has been adopted by every U.S. Tier 1 and Tier 2 service provider, as well as a growing number of global, regional and rural ILECs, CLECs and alternative carriers. More U.S. Tier 3 and CLEC service providers have selected the Total Access 5000 for Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) deployments than any other platform since September of last year, according to Broadband Communities. This has enabled ADTRAN to take market share from incumbent vendors. In addition, with growing global penetration, the Total Access 5000 is now deployed by carriers on six continents, making it one of the most widely accepted broadband access and transport platforms on the market, resulting in unprecedented and sustained average quarterly growth exceeding 50 percent.

"Today's business environment is driving acceleration of network change at an unprecedented rate. Streaming video downloads now account for 30 percent of all peak downstream traffic, 300 million social networking users are active daily, and the demand for mobile data capacity is projected to multiply by 25 to 45 times over the next few years," said Jay Wilson, senior vice president and general manager, ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division. "The Total Access 5000, coupled with our extensive broadband portfolio, turnkey professional services and network management tools, have empowered ADTRAN to achieve widespread adoption within service provider networks around the globe. This portfolio of innovative solutions enables service providers to quickly and continuously reinvent their access and transport networks to serve business, residential and mobile customers."

"The Total Access 5000 differs from other access platforms in the industry because it has a proven ability to scale, both in terms of bandwidth capacity and application scope," said Kevin Schneider, CTO, ADTRAN. "This unique design enables service providers to quickly adapt to rapid changes in network capacity requirements, subscriber usage behavior and applications. It also provides the ability to quickly launch new best-in-class service offerings. The Total Access 5000 is commercially deployed to deliver 13 major service offerings today in optical, wireless and wireline applications. With a growing number of network options and industry architecture breakthroughs, the Total Access 5000 provides a means for service evolution for years to come."

The ADTRAN Total Access 5000's architecture enables service providers to protect their investment and future-proof their networks. With a multi-terabit backplane, the Total Access 5000 offers unmatched capacity and scalability. Using the industry's widest range of access and transport modules, it is extremely flexible, allowing service providers of all sizes to easily launch new services. With the addition of Packet Optical Transport System (P-OTS) capabilities at the edge, the Total Access 5000 can support extensible transport scalability of up to 400 Gbps over a single fiber. This system flexibility enables service providers to connect nodes and aggregate traffic in a number of different ways, such as point-to-point (1G or 10G), ERPS rings, and WDM making it the perfect fit for the future of edge networking, while also supporting the industry's most comprehensive array of access technologies within a single platform.

"There are all types of topologies in the network today and service providers must be able to quickly deliver new revenue-generating services," said Jeff Heynen, directing analyst, Broadband and Video, Infonetics. "The flexibility and scalability of the Total Access 5000 allows operators of all types and sizes to quickly and easily address the changing needs of their customer base. ADTRAN's innovation and vision with additions such as Optical Networking Edge, Advanced Operational Environment and Ultra Broadband Ethernet set a clear course for future development and the ability to adapt to new technologies for decades to come."
