Verizon Captures IEEE Communications Society Best Tutorial Paper Award

Winner Selected From all Tutorial Papers From Previous Five Years

June 22, 2011

NEW YORK – Verizon has won the 2011 IEEE Communications Society Best Tutorial Paper Award for the company’s technical paper entitled “Flexible Architectures for Optical Transport Nodes and Networks.” This paper, published in the July 2010 issue of the IEEE Communications Magazine, was selected from all the tutorial papers published in any IEEE Communications Society magazine or journal during the previous five calendar years.

The authors – Steven Gringeri, Bert Basch, Vishnu Shukla, Roman Egorov and Tiejun J. Xia, all of whom work in Verizon’s Corporate Technology organization — noted in the 13-page paper that as optical transport networks move toward highly dynamic mesh-based topologies, the need exists for flexibility in supporting key design elements as well as providing scalability for bit rates beyond 100G.

Glenn Wellbrock, director, Verizon optical transport, network architecture and design, accepted the award at the International Communications Conference on Communications 2011 in Kyoto, Japan, on June 7.

All award nominations were screened and a short list was prepared by the IEEE Communications Society selection committee, with preliminary approval from editors of IEEE publications as well as the directors of IEEE magazines and journals. The Communications Society Awards Committee made the final selection.

The award-winning IEEE Communications Magazine is ranked No. 6 among the most-cited journals in telecommunications, according to the Journal Citation Reports, which is published by the Institute for Scientific Information.
