SkyLink Completed Modernization of its Packet Core Network in Moscow

Mobile operator SkyLink has completed modernization of its Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN) and migrated data traffic to Cisco ASR 5000 intelligent platform in the Moscow Region. For the first time in Russia the project will enable the operator to expand the functionality of filtering, distribution, prioritization and management of traffic and quality of services (QoS). The project was implemented by a joint team of specialists from SkyLink, Cisco and SPM, the project’s system integrator.

“Our objective is to build a multi-standard network. Modernization of PDSN is an important step of our strategic plan aimed at developing IT infrastructure of our company. Its implementation will help us to improve technical parameters of service delivery and enhance traffic management features. Our company was the first Russian mobile operator who started using such features in content tariffs. In future we are going to use them in 4G networks”, said Andrey Lyapin, director of business units SkyLink-Moscow and SkyLink-Center.

Support for various access technologies at PDSN for 3G networks based on CDMA technology (including EV-DO Rev.A/Rev.B), as well as support for packet core functions (SGSN and GGSN) for 2G/3G networks and LTE (full support for MME, SGW and PGW) together with integrated service functions (deep packet inspection, traffic management, optimization of transport protocols, etc.) will provide the operator with the capabilities of detailed control, flexible tariffs and management of user sessions which, in its turn, will help to develop existing and introduce new personalized services at minimal cost and to expand LTE-ready network infrastructure.

“Next steps of implementation are planned in Voronezh, Vladimir, Krasnodar and, later, in other regions. We are sure that SkyLink specialists have made the right choice, and Cisco ASR 5000 capabilities will support existing SkyLink services as well as future LTE-based features,” commented Andrey Borovkov, vice-president, OOO SPM Ltd.

“The launch of the innovative solution is an important milestone in cooperation between Cisco and SkyLink, our strategic customer. We are proud of the choice made by Russia’s first 3G operator. We hope that Cisco ASR 5000 will help the operator not only to build a high-performance packet infrastructure for subscriber services, but also to deploy LTE-based customer services which are new to the Russian market”, said Pavel Betsis, managing director of Cisco Russia.

Cisco ASR 5000 is a flexible platform which can scale along with the growth of subscriber base and implementation of new services. Intelligent network services based on Cisco ASR support real-time delivery of personalized services, as well as development of new types of two-way business models. High reliability of the platform in combination with intelligent load balancing functions ensure stability and manageability of service delivery parameters.
