SEATTLE, June 23, 2011 — After 35 years of thrilling victories and history-making moments, the Seattle Seahawks, Sounders FC and CenturyLink are proud to enter a new era of professional sports; Qwest Field is becoming CenturyLink Field. The partnership exemplifies the company’s commitment to Seattle since acquiring Qwest on April 1. “CenturyLink is thrilled to continue this legacy with the announcement of CenturyLink Field,” said Brian Stading, CenturyLink NW Region President. “For us, this is more than our name on the stadium. It’s about building on a partnership that began between Qwest, the teams that have played on the field and the fans who have supported them for decades. We look forward to raising our voices with the fans who have redefined the term homefield advantage.”
From donating funds to Page Ahead for every ’08 Matt Hasselbeck playoff touchdown pass, to serving as presenting sponsor of the Spirit of 12 Partners Program to the CenturyLink Leadership Challenge, CenturyLink will continue to focus on charitable and volunteer efforts in the Seattle area. Those efforts will focus on education and youth programs; technology-focused initiatives; and locally-driven efforts that strengthen communities and make them better places to live. “CenturyLink’s long-term commitment to their customers and our fans is clearly demonstrated today,” said Seahawks, Sounders FC and First & Goal, Inc. president Peter McLoughlin. “Now CenturyLink Field becomes synonymous with the 12th Man and Sounders FC supporters.”
The first professional game played at the Kingdome was the Sounders versus the New York Cosmos on April 25, 1976 followed by the Seattle Seahawks versus San Francisco 49ers on August 1 that same year. The Kingdome was imploded in March 2000, resulting in a new stadium and exhibition hall being built. In 2004, Qwest and the Seahawks announced Qwest Field and Qwest Field Event Center as the new facility name. In 2009, Qwest Field became home for the Seattle Sounders FC.
