Fibertech Networks to Demonstrate IPv6 Readiness

Participating in World IPv6 Day on June 8, 2011

June 07, 2011 – Rochester, NY
Prepared to demonstrate its readiness for the transition from the IPv4 to IPv6 Internet environment, Fibertech Networks, a leading provider of fiber-optic broadband services, today announced its participation in World IPv6 Day on June 8, 2011. Fibertech is showcasing its readiness by making the company’s website (www.fibertech.com) accessible through IPv6 networks. On June 8, Fibertech will have both an IPv4 and IPv6 address in the DNS for 24 hours along with other participating companies.

According to Tom Perrone, Director of Engineering and Network Planning for Fibertech, the company is progressing smoothly with this transition and is ready to help its customers start to plan for the switch to IPv6.

“Our participation in World IPv6 Day is just one way of showcasing our readiness for this Internet transition,” said Perrone.  “In our labs, we’ve also tested equipment which allows for simultaneous IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. We’ve confirmed that OSPF and BGP routing protocols are working. We’ve conducted initial inter-vendor operability testing with our transport equipment. And we’re on the verge of a few production trials as well as our plan to roll out IPv6 network wide.”

With IPv4 address space expected to run out by the end of 2011, it’s important for organizations to make the switch from IPv4 to IPv6. Without switching to the IPv6 environment, companies risk significant cost increases as well as limited functionality for Internet users everywhere. World IPv6 Day is a 24-hour global scale test where participating organizations will showcase their readiness and capability of transitions into IPv6. The 24-hr testing of IPv6 will require Fibertech and other participants to offer their content over the IPv6 environment. By enabling content in the IPv6 system for 24 hours, organizations participating in World IPv6 Day will be able to determine any necessary improvements that need to be made before a permanent transition is made in the future.

“When we saw the chance to participate in IPv6 Day, we jumped on it,” said Perrone.“We wanted to show our customers and the rest of the world that we’re going to be ready for this transition. By September, we plan to bring our first beta IPv6 customer up live and soon after will begin a rollout to other customers.”
