Fastweb Selects Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router for Enhanced Video and Internet Services

Italian Service Provider Chooses Cisco to Roll Out Next-Generation Network Platform

SAN JOSE, Calif. and ROME, Italy – June 7, 2011 – Fastweb, a leading Italian telecommunications provider, today announced that it has selected the Cisco Aggregation Services Router 9000 Series (ASR 9000) as the foundation of the company’s next-generation edge network.  Fastweb will deploy the ASR 9000 across its network, enabling delivery of enhanced video, data, voice and cloud services throughout its converged network.

This investment highlights Fastweb’s commitment to developing its Internet Protocol (IP) network to meet rising consumer and business bandwidth requirements and providing the technological platform required for delivery of next-generation Internet services such as high definition video conferencing.  Deployment of the ASR 9000 begins this month and will include 32 ASR 9000 systems initially in Fastweb’s 10 Gigabit Ethernet network.

Cisco will also host a global public webcast Tuesday, June 7 at 10 a.m. PDT/ 1 p.m. EDT to discuss significant developments in its service provider technology portfolio.  To register, please visit the event registration page.

“We are seeing demand from our customers for higher connectivity speeds, as both businesses and consumers look to take advantage of the next generation of video and internet services,” said Guido Roda, director of engineering, Fastweb.  “We have been using the Cisco ASR 9000 across a small part of our network and have seen firsthand how the system can improve our network’s capacity and provide the necessary quality of service. We are excited to roll out the system across our network and look forward to building on our relationship with Cisco.”

“Across Europe, there is a fast-growing appetite for data-heavy video services such as IPTV, video calls and TelePresence,” David Bevilacqua, vice president, Cisco Italy, added. “Service providers therefore need to act to ensure that their networks can deliver these services to businesses and consumers quickly and reliably.   We are delighted that Fastweb has chosen the Cisco ASR 9000 to help deliver these kinds of services across Italy. Cisco has worked closely with Fastweb in developing its network in recent years, and we are looking forward to continuing to build on this relationship.”
