Colt Wins at Data Centres in Europe 2011 Awards

Colt recognised for the efficiency and environmental benefits of its European Data Centres

Colt, Europe’s leading information delivery platform, has won the European Award for Energy Efficiency in Data Centres at the Data Centre in Europe 2011 Awards, held in London.  The award recognises Colt as an example to the European data centre industry of energy efficiency innovation.

Operating 19 data centres across Europe, Colt’s board challenged its data centre team to reduce global data centre power usage effectiveness (PUE) by 10 percent, by making energy efficiency improvements across all of its data centre sites. To achieve this, Colt’s Data Centre Services team reviewed every aspect of energy usage, from removing old cooling systems and replacing them with high-efficiency new equipment, to improving data centre airflow by upgrading racks and raised floors and optimising temperature set points.  The result was a drop in energy usage of more than 10 percent.

“We’re delighted that our pioneering approach to managing and building data centres has been recognised by some of the industry’s most respected figures,” said Bernard Geoghegan, Executive Vice President for Colt Data Centre Services. “Our deep operational experience and commitment to continual innovation eliminated many of the inefficiencies inherent in today’s data centres and provided significant environmental and cost benefits for our customers. The energy efficiency expertise and experience gained in pursuit of this goal is now being applied across the Colt estate by local teams“.

Colt is also leading the market with its pioneering Modular Data Centre approach that delivers a PUE of 1.21, substantially reducing the overall cost of running the data centre.

At the Data Centre in Europe 2011 Awards, Colt was also a finalist in the Green Award for Sustainability category which recognised businesses that have significantly demonstrated sustainability in the data centre over a sustained period and delivered clear environmental benefits.
