Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router to Enable Advanced Video and Online Entertainment and Communication Services for Cox

SAN JOSE, Calif.– June 7, 2011 – Cisco announced today that Cox Communications will deploy the Cisco Aggregation Services Router 9000 Series (ASR 9000) as the foundation of its next-generation nationwide Internet Protocol (IP) network, which will play a critical role in enabling advanced new video and online entertainment and communication services to Cox’s nationwide customer base.

Cisco will also host a global public webcast Tuesday, June 7 at 10 a.m. PDT/ 1 p.m. EDT to discuss significant developments in its service provider technology portfolio.  To register, please visit the event registration page.

Cox manages and maintains consumer voice, video and data residential services for its customers on a fully converged, next-generation IP network, which requires advanced IP traffic aggregation capabilities and scale.  The Cisco ASR 9000 has the unique ability to support these requirements while providing operators with a network foundation to scale video services in a cost-effective manner.

Cisco predicts that the number of network-connected devices will be more than 15 billion, twice the world’s population, by 2015. In the fifth annual Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Forecast (2010-2015) released last week, the company also said the total amount of global Internet traffic will quadruple by 2015 and reach 966 exabytes per year.  The projected increase of Internet traffic between 2014 and 2015 alone is 200 exabytes, which is greater than the total amount of Internet Protocol traffic generated globally in 2010.

On the verge of reaching 1 zettabyte, which is equal to a sextillion bytes, or a trillion gigabytes by 2015, global IP traffic growth is driven by four primary factors, according to Cisco: an increasing number of devices; more Internet users; faster broadband speed; and more video.

The Cisco ASR 9000 platform also uses Cisco’s IOS XR modular software operating system, simplifying an operator’s network operations and enabling economic and seamless comprehensive system redundancy and network resiliency.
