Ciscopredicts that the number of network-connected devices will be more than 15 billion, twice the world’s population, by 2015. In the fifth annual Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Forecast (2010-2015) released earlier this week, the company also said the total amount of global Internet traffic will quadruple by 2015 and reach 966 exabytes per year. The projected increase of Internet traffic between 2014 and 2015 alone is 200 exabytes, which is greater than the total amount of Internet Protocol traffic generated globally in 2010.
On the verge of reaching 1 zettabyte, which is equal to a sextillion bytes, or a trillion gigabytes by 2015, global IP traffic growth is driven by four primary factors, according to Cisco: an increasing number of devices; more Internet users; faster broadband speed; and more video.According to the study, by 2015, the Asia Pacific region will generate the most IP traffic (24.1 exabytes per month), surpassing last year’s leader, North America (22.3 exabytes per month), for the top spot.
The Cisco ASR 9000 platform will help China Telecom meet these fast-growing bandwidth needs as it continues to add new products, services and applications to its growing portfolio. The deployment highlights China Telecom’s leadership in advancing its network to meet increasing consumer and business bandwidth requirements, while also enabling China Telecom to rapidly deploy new revenue-generating services and monetize its investment.
Mr. John Ng, Managing Director, General Manager of Cisco China Service Provider Business Unit. “China Telecom, as the industry leader and an excellent comprehensive telecom service provider, has been experiencingrobust growth in its user base and application level. Cisco is honored to strengthen its partnership with China Telecom in providing the Cisco ASR 9000 Series routers to help the company roll out more IPTV services for users. We strongly believe that by building on the success of this relationship, we can both further solidify our leadership positionsin the industry and stay in the competitive edge.”
The Cisco ASR 9000 includes unique capabilities optimizing the platform for video delivery, including integrated content caching and in-line video performance monitoring. The platform also uses Cisco’s IOS XR modular software operating system, simplifying China Telecom’s network operations and enabling economic and seamless comprehensive system redundancy and network resiliency.
