Real-time, low latency network technology enables centralized production
with same quality as if on site
LAS VEGAS (NAB 2011), United States – Net Insight, a leading developer of efficient and scalable Quality of Transport (QoT) solutions for media, IP and broadcast networks, is driving the trend toward remote workflow with transport solutions that deliver real-time, low latency content with 100 percent Quality of Service (QoS). Remote workflow solutions significantly improve efficiency, cost savings and quality of both remote production environments and live event production. As a result, covering a larger number of live events is now possible and editing during the content production lifecycle is more efficient.
“Using real-time media networks reduces costs and increases efficiency in editing and production,” said Per Lindgren, vice president of business development and founder of Net Insight. “To virtualize video production, the studio quality Wide Area Network (WAN) must have zero packet loss and low latency, which is where Net Insight’s Nimbra platform, the most efficient and scalable media-rich transport solution available, excels.”
Remote workflows for centralizing production have applications in both remote production environments and live events. With Net Insight’s Nimbra platform, there is no limitation on the distance between the event site and the production studio. The platform’s unique method of channelizing network traffic makes efficient use of the bandwidth increasing the cost efficiency of the total solution.
To maintain the integrity of content capable of HD quality for final distribution in remote workflows, video must be transported uncompressed or lightly compressed. Both the transmission delay and compression delay contribute to potential latency, making Net Insight’s solution ideal to maintain content quality during the production lifecycle. When a private, low-cost dedicated fiber network is available, Net Insight makes it possible to send uncompressed video. If the application calls for transport over a public network, the solution uses JPEG 2000 to preserve the highest possible content integrity.
Remote Workflow in Live Events
An example of remote workflows in live events is Net Insight’s work together with Twentyfourseven, a technical supplier in the Broadcast industry and Telia Sonera International Carrier. Twentyfourseven is optimizing the production of live events by centralizing production at Twentyfourseven’s main production facilities. This means that only the arena equipment need to be sent to the venue, which eliminates the need to send an OB bus, and its associated crew, with a satellite uplink to the event site, resulting in significant cost savings. Twentyfourseven can offer broadband connectivity to its customers, through the global media network of Telia Sonera International Carrier, based on the Net Insight Nimbra platform. This workflow, supported by high quality real-time media networks, enables the production crew to remotely control the arena equipment such as cameras, sound and speaker equipment from the centralized control room.
For broadband connectivity, the solution uses TeliaSonera International Carrier, which bases its media contribution network on Net Insight’s Nimbra platform. The company provides the service Media Connect for Occasional Use on their global fiber network to transport the event feed. This type of service, because its pricing is based on non-continuous usage, is ideal for this application. The service is designed to meet the high quality demands for live broadcasts with uncompressed video links to transport video from the events.
Remote Workflow in Post Production
VCC GmbH Agency for Postproduction (VCC), one of Europe’s largest post production companies, is using Net Insight’s equipment for remote workflow production. The company installed Net Insight’s Nimbra platform to reduce both time and travel costs when producing TV spots, commercials and other video material for its customers. VCC sends uncompressed material from its headquarters in Hamburg, to its subsidiaries in Babelsberg, Berlin, Dusseldorf Frankfurt and Leipzig. Key customer executives can then watch, discuss and edit the same material in real time while working in different locations. Before, the VCC team and its customers would travel to the main production offices in Hamburg to review and edit the post-production video.
Using Net Insight’s Nimbra platform, the company installed a 2.5 GBPR ring solution that sends professional video in real time over HD-SDI, SD-SDI and Ethernet. The solution accommodates the larger video files (2K and HDTV) required to meet today’s standards for movies, television shows and commercials.
“We are now more competitive as our customers appreciate the superior support, flexibility and high quality production we offer with this alternative way of doing production,” said Frank Schliefer, CTO at VCC GmbH Agency for Postproduction.
