Lime and Xtera Communications Successfully Deploy Caribbean East West Cable Network

DALLAS, TEXAS – (April 19, 2011) – Xtera Communications, Inc., a leading global provider of optical networking solutions, and LIME, the Caribbean arm of Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) have successfully completed the installation of the Caribbean East West Cable network.

The 1, 700 km multi-million dollar submarine cable connects Jamaica, the British Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic. The ultra high bandwidth transmission system reinforces LIME’s position as the Caribbean’s premier wholesale capacity provider of voice, data and evolving media-rich services.

The undersea cable will also enable LIME to meet the rising demand for high-speed bandwidth from consumers and business customers in the 14 Caribbean islands where the company currently operates. It will also facilitate the roll out of a slate of new fixed broadband and mobile data services that LIME is currently developing for customers which require high quality capacity support.

In addition, the network will enhance the ability of LIME’s parent company, CWC to serve its carrier customers in North and Latin America.

LIME entrusted Xtera with the planning, design, engineering, installation, and commissioning and project management of this submarine cable project. The network uses Xtera’s NXT submarine line terminal equipment and associated management equipment to provide a day one capacity of 120 Gb/s across the system and is capable of being upgraded to ultimately transport 720 Gb/s using the supplied technology, with even higher values possible with future technology.

Xtera’s NXT is a high performance submarine line terminal supporting new deployments and providing significant capacity upgrades for existing systems. It can transport a variety of traffic types, such as Gigabit Ethernet and SONET/SDH at different line rates – in this case some 2.5G interfaces were supplied to handle existing traffic. The NXT also extends the life of the initial investment as it can provide high capacity with a relatively narrow bandwidth cable, a key requirement given LIME’s imaginative re-use of existing cable.

“LIME has worked closely with Xtera Communications for years. We were pleased to have them on the cable relay project and to have the advantage of their global project management experience,” said Patrick Bradd, LIME’s Chief Technology Officer.

“Xtera has participated in a number of projects in the Caribbean and Latin America. We are pleased to be able to partner again with LIME to develop infrastructure that support media-rich communication services for consumers and businesses in the region,” said Jon Hopper, CEO, Xtera Communications.
