Pacnet Launches Sydney Data Centre

The new centrally-located facility is part of Pacnet’s data centre expansion strategy to deliver robust, carrier-neutral data centre infrastructure across the region

SYDNEY, 15 February 2011 – Pacnet today announced the launch of its Sydney Data Centre, its latest investment into Australia that is designed to meet the rapidly growing hosting and co-location demands of Australian businesses.
“Australia is one of our largest markets where we are seeing a huge demand for advanced IT solutions such as cloud computing services and disaster recovery, and also a growing amount of digital content being generated,” said Bill Barney, Chief Executive Officer of Pacnet. “This is fueling a growing demand for robust, high-grade data centre infrastructure, which we are delivering through our new Sydney Data Centre, and across the region through our recently launched Data Landing Stations in Hong Kong and Singapore.”

According to Frost & Sullivan, the demand for data center services in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) is forecast to see a compound annual growth rate of 13.9% from $442.3m in 2009 to $1.1b in 2016. The research firm also noted in a report that in 2009, capacity utilisation in most data centres in ANZ was between 80-90%.

Located in the central business district of Sydney at Liverpool Street, the first phase of the new Pacnet Sydney Data Centre delivers 5,920 square feet (550 square metres) of Tier III data centre space and will raise the amount of data centre space that Pacnet operates globally to more than 105,420 square feet (9,794 square metres). When fully built out, the Sydney Data Centre will scale up to 41,700 square feet (3,870 square metres).

“By locating our new data centre in the central business district of Sydney, customers will also save significant time and cost should they need to visit the facility,“ noted Deborah Homewood, Chief Executive Officer of Pacnet Australia and New Zealand.

The Pacnet Sydney Data Centre features a high power density of up to 6 KVA per cabinet, redundant power and cooling systems, advanced fire detection and suppression systems. The facility also provides  advanced 24 x 7 security access systems and high performance Building Management System (BMS) with power trending reporting capabilities at each IT rack position.

Also located within the same building and next to the data centre is Pacnet’s new Sydney Network Operations Centre (NOC). Together with the NOC in Singapore, the two NOCs have full failover capabilities to ensure that Pacnet’s global network is monitored 24×7, even if one of the NOCs experience difficulties.

The Pacnet Sydney Data Centre is part of Pacnet’s growing network of data centres, which includes Asia’s pioneering Data Landing Stations (DLSs) built inside its cable landing facilities. These facilities offer the unparalleled benefit of access to Pacnet’s resilient pan-Asian subsea cable network. The carrier-neutral Pacnet Sydney Data Centre allows customers to leverage Pacnet’s powerful backbone network which offers low-latency connectivity across Asia and access to domestic Points-of-Presence via local loop partners in Australia.
