NTT Communications Leads the Way in Ensuring Smooth Transition to IPv6

Official IPv6 sponsor for APRICOT-APAN 2011 proves industry excellence

(Hong Kong – 17 Feb 2011) With global IPv4 addresses nearing total depletion, the transition to IPv6 – the next-generation internet protocol – can no longer be delayed. NTT Com Asia Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTT Communications Corporation, today announced the sponsorship of 10Gbps IPv6 Global IP Transit Service for APRICOT-APAN 2011. Since NTT Communications launched the world’s first commercial global IPv6 backbone in 2001, the company has been leveraging its leading technological expertise in IPv6 networks to ensure a smooth transition for its customers.

“Enterprises can no longer afford to delay the deployment of an IPv6 network. IPv6 embodies the concept of ‘Network Everywhere’. Enterprises and ISPs that operate IPv4-only networks may soon face difficulties in continuing and expanding their activities on the internet, inevitably resulting in diminished coverage and business opportunities. The advantages of IPv6 will be obvious when wide-scale deployment accelerates. It is vital to act now. Our IPv6 transit service in native or IPv6/IPv4 dual stack modes will enable a flexible and swift transition without communication breakdowns for service providers, enterprises or individuals,” said Mr. Ricky Lo, Executive Vice President, Global Network Business Division of NTT Com Asia.

“Thanks to NTT Com Asia’s sponsorship of 10Gbps IPv6 Global IP Transit Service, the company’s industry expertise on IPv6 enables industry professionals at the APRICOT-APAN 2011 Conference to enjoy fast, reliable and secure internet connections that come with IPv6 networks. The exhaustion of IPv4 addresses is a clear and direct message on the importance of incorporating IPv6 adoption into their infrastructure and demonstrations by global carriers like NTT Communications will help enterprises realize its significance,” said Mr. Che-Hoo Cheng, Chairman of the APRICOT-APAN 2011 Local Organizing Committee.

NTT Communications currently operates one of the largest Tier-1 IPv6 backbones in the world. NTT Communications’ network also provides comprehensive end-to-end support for IPv4/IPv6 dual stack, which ensures a seamless transition to IPv6 for customers. Last year, the company launched an IPv6-compatible Global IP-VPN service in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, and is planning to expand to other markets. IPv6, the next-generation internet protocol with massive capacity for new addresses, is now vital for all internet stakeholders. NTT Communications’ sponsorship of 10Gbps IPv6 Global IP Transit Service at APRICOT-APAN 2011, will allow the participants from all over the world to enjoy guaranteed high-speed, reliable and low-latency internet service. How to ensure the smooth transition from IPv4 to IPv6 in the Asia Pacific region will be one of the most important topics at this annual event.

APRICOT-APAN 2011, the biggest internet conference in Asia Pacific, will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 21-25 February. The unprecedented event is jointly held by the APRICOT (Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies) and APAN (Asia Pacific Advanced Network). APRICOT-APAN 2011 is joined by several other noteworthy conferences, including the meeting of APNIC 31 (31st Asia Pacific Network Information Centre), which is the coordination body in Asia Pacific for the allocation of internet addresses, including both IPv4 and IPv6.

The Number Resource Organization (NRO) officially announced on 3 Feb 2011 that the free pool of available IPv4 addresses is now fully depleted. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) allocated the last five /8 blocks of IPv4 address space to five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) on 31 Jan 2011, according to the Global Policy for the Allocation of the Remaining IPv4 Address Space. This means that there are no longer any IPv4 addresses available for allocation from the IANA to the five RIRs.
