New Utility Line Sensor to Deliver Unmatched Power Sensing, Ease of Installation and reliable communication
SAN DIEGO – Jan. 31, 2011 – Grid Sentry LLC. and Sprint today announced plans to launch the Grid Sentry GS-200 Line Sentry featuring wireless connectivity via the Sprint 3G network. The Line Sentry provides continuous measurement of current and line temperature as well as the identification of fault locations on electric utility distribution grids. This new device provides detailed information about the transmission grid, giving utility operators the information to make real-time decisions, all from a device that can be installed in minutes. The GS-200 Line Sentry is expected to be available on Sprint’s network this summer.
The Grid Sentry sensors are designed to provide the distribution grid performance data that will allow utilities to improve the efficiency of the distribution grid. The GS sensors are mounted directly on the distribution lines and data is reported directly to the control center without the use of collectors. The GS-200 provides the following functionality: measurement of RMS line current, conductor line temperature, report occurrences of fault currents and indications of line-out condition. Together, the Grid Sentry GS-200 and the Sprint 3G network will provide a high-performance platform to supply information that allows utilities to reduce power losses (and costs), increase the efficiency of the distribution grid, and improve knowledge of outages and their locations, bringing the benefits of the Smart Grid to the power industry and its customers.
“Grid Sentry is enthusiastic about this opportunity to offer this high-value capability to Sprint’s utility industry customers,” says Tom McCann, president-Grid Sentry LLC. “Our relationship with Sprint gives us the ability to meet effectively the critical communications demands of the distribution automation market.”
“With more than 10 years of experience developing communications products in the machine-to-machine market, Sprint is dedicated to cooperative efforts with companies like Grid Sentry to bring the best technology solutions to work in smart grid solutions,” says Wayne Ward, vice president-Emerging Solutions Group, Sprint. “As a public wireless carrier, Sprint offers cost-effective and flexible wireless network solutions for utilities, municipalities and application developers, and has demonstrated excellence in utility applications ranging from SCADA, Telemetry, Emergency Response, Mobile Workforce enablement and Push-to-Talk. We are working with our partners and customers to deliver the smart grid vision, energy management services and eco-friendly energy technologies.”
The Sprint 3G network reaches more than 283 million people in 20,035 cities (inclusive of data roaming). Sprint 3G allows utilities to download large amounts of data reliably at high speed. Grid Sentry and Sprint are also developing a version of Line Sentry that will operate at 4G speeds. The Sprint 4G network is currently available in 71 markets across the country, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City and San Francisco. For more information, visit
