- FairPoint and the American Red Cross Collect 592 Units this Holiday Season
- Largest One-Day Holiday Collection in Maine Red Cross History
PORTLAND, Maine (January 6, 2011) – FairPoint Communications and the American Red Cross are thrilled to announce the success of the first FairPoint Bundle Up Blood Drive. The drive collected 592 units of blood, which could potentially save over 1,700 lives.
Winter is a critical time for blood donation due to severe weather and flu season. Recognizing the need during this challenging time, FairPoint helped create this super blood drive. FairPoint has a longstanding partnership with the American Red Cross and has held blood drives in the past, which were well attended and staffed by FairPoint volunteers.
Dozens of FairPoint employees donated blood or volunteered their time for this blood drive. “I am very proud of how our employees came together to support this blood drive. It is a true testament to our community focus,” said Michael Reed, FairPoint’s Maine state president.
“The FairPoint Bundle Up Blood Drive gave us a much-needed boost in our blood supply which was critically low, given the recent blizzard,” said Ellen Russell, director of Maine operations for the American Red Cross Blood Services. “FairPoint was a great partner and we are delighted with the results.”
Blood is used for patients undergoing many surgical procedures, organ transplants, trauma and chemotherapy. Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood and more than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day. Each unit could potentially be distributed to three recipients.
