GPON deployment to bring advanced fiber-based broadband services to southwest Louisiana
PETALUMA, CA — January 24, 2011 — Calix, Inc. (NYSE:CALX, news, filings) today announced that Broadband Stimulus award winner Cameron Communications has selected the Calix C7 Multiservice Access Platform (MSAP) to bring advanced fiber-based broadband services to a trio of “unserved” and “underserved” communities in southwest Louisiana. Capable of delivering broadband speeds of up to one gigabit per second (Gbps), Cameron Communications will deploy gigabit passive optical network (GPON) technology to bring advanced digital video services, extremely fast data services, and high-quality voice services to the residents, businesses and community institutions in Moss Bluff, Oakdale and Vinton, Louisiana. Cameron Communications, the parent company for formal award recipient LBH, LLC., received $33.4 million in overall funds, including a $16.7 million grant and a $16.7 million loan for plant engineering, materials, labor, and other costs, including access equipment.
“Moss Bluff, Oakdale, and Vinton will now enjoy the benefits of the ‘information superhighway’ with this Stimulus award allowing us to construct a world class fiber network infrastructure capable of bringing advanced broadband services to these communities,” said George Mack, president of Cameron Communications and LBH, LLC. “The bandwidth and fiber access infrastructure created by these projects will allow the residents and businesses in these areas to keep pace with the increasing demands of a global economy, as well as provide infrastructure upgrades to local schools, libraries, hospitals, public safety and governmental agencies. These projects are critical to the future of these communities, and our long term relationship with Calix has shown us that we can count on them to deliver when the stakes are high.”
Cameron Communications will be leveraging the Calix C7 MSAP along with the industry’s broadest portfolio of optical network terminals (ONTs), the 700GX/GE ONT family, across all three of its projects to deliver advanced radio frequency (RF) video, data, and voice services. A major part of the Calix Unified Access portfolio, Calix fiber access solutions are the most widely deployed in North America as measured by both revenue and optical line terminal ports (Infonetics, Q3 2010).
“We are honored to have been chosen to be a key vendor to Cameron Communications’ ambitious Broadband Stimulus initiatives,”said John Colvin, vice president of field operations at Calix.”A strong Calix customer since 2002, Cameron Communications has continually invested in bringing advanced broadband services into the region, even in the face of great adversity, like the devastation suffered after Hurricane Rita in 2005. Broadband Stimulus has now presented them with great opportunity, and the beneficiary will be the citizens of Moss Bluff, Oakdale, and Vinton, Louisiana, who will soon enjoy one of the nation’s most advanced broadband infrastructures.”
With today’s announcement, aggregate Calix vendor selections by Broadband Stimulus winners for “last mile” and “middle mile” awards have now reached 23 different projects representing approximately $353 million in Stimulus-related grants, loans, and private investment for plant engineering, materials, labor, and other costs, including access equipment.
