KDDI America Will Release Sanyo Zio to Asian Ethnic Market in USA

KDDI America, Inc. (Headquarters in New York, NY, CEO: Yasushi Kubota) and Kyocera Communications Inc. (President: Eiichi Toriyama), provider of Kyocera- and Sanyo-branded wireless devices, today announced that KDDI America will release Kyocera’s Android-powered Sanyo Zio™ smartphone in December. It will be the second Android device offered by KDDI America, which is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) using Sprint’s nationwide network and targeting its services at theJapanese and Korean markets in the United States.

KDDI America will offer Zio with Korean, Japanese and Spanish language customizations, as well as with additional applications of their own.  It will be pre-installed with Simeji, the most popular and highly customizable Japanese IME application available for Android users. Zio also will be the first Android device to be equipped with an application called BTk, which enables the use of Bluetooth®-based wireless keyboards. The application was developed by a team of developers in Japan called Android DEvelopers’ Club*, which announced BTk at Google Developer Day Tokyo in September. Zio will launch with Android 2.1, featuring enhanced Microsoft® Exchange capabilities, and an upgrade to Android 2.2 will be planned.

Zio uses CDMA2000 1xEV-DO rev. A and Wi-Fi network technologies and features an impressive, high-resolution 3.5-inch WVGA touchscreen display as a backdrop for a fully customizable mobile multimedia experience. Along with the touchscreen, an intuitive, effortless trackball helps users navigate features such as the 3.2 MP camera with video record/playback, media player, full HTML web browser, Google Maps™ and more than 80,000 widgets and applications such as Facebook, Twitter, Open Table and more available in Android Market. The phone offers substantial user-available internal memory (256MB) and supports microSDHC cards up to 32GB via its external card slot. Zio comes equipped with an ambient light sensor and accelerometer for easy viewing virtually any way, anywhere. Ultra-light and sleek, the phone measures only 116 x 58.6 x 12.2 mm and weighs only 105g.

Final specifications, availability and pricing information for Zio will be provided in the upcoming weeks.
