Carrier Ethernet switch recognized by panel of MSO engineering experts as compelling product for supporting mobile backhaul and business services
Linthicum, MD — 10/05/2010
Ciena® Corporation (NASDAQ:CIEN, news, filings), the network specialist, today announced that its CN 5150™ Service Aggregation Switch received 3.5 out of 5 diamonds in Broadband Gear Report (BGR)’s 2010 Diamond Technology Reviews. Ciena’s CN 5150 is part of its Carrier Ethernet Service Delivery (CESD) portfolio, which has been deployed by more than 100 carriers, wireless service providers, cable operators and new entrants in 25 countries, primarily for mobile backhaul and business services. Based on these deployments, Heavy Reading recognized Ciena in its Q4 2009 and Q1 2010 Carrier Ethernet Access Platform (CEAP) Quarterly Market Tracker as the industry’s number one supplier of Ethernet-over-fiber access equipment.
Ciena’s CN 5150 is a compact, high-density Ethernet aggregation switch that is specifically designed to address the service and cost requirements of metro aggregation networks. The platform includes key features such as the latest timing and synchronization protocols to enable migration to pure packet architectures and to support 4G mobile technologies such as Long-Term Evolution (LTE); a variety of Carrier Ethernet transport options to deliver a wide range of connectivity services with guaranteed QoS (Quality of Service) and multi-vendor switching and routing interoperability; a rich set of Operation, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) capabilities to monitor the status of system and network links; and the ability to operate across extended temperature ranges in a wide variety of physical environments.
Ciena’s CN 5150 also features a software architecture based on a common service-aware operating system used across the company’s CESD portfolio, providing a consistent deployment model and zero-touch device configuration and service provisioning. This automated approach delivers up to 60 percent faster service provisioning and as much as a 40 percent reduction in operational expense versus platforms that rely on manual configurations.
“In its sixth year, the Diamond Technology Reviews program continues to recognize some of the top products and solutions available to the cable industry, including this year’s recognition of Ciena’s CN 5150 Service Aggregation Switch,” said Tim Hermes, publisher of BGR. “The CN 5150 was recognized by our judges as a scalable and cost-effective Carrier Ethernet device, which ensures maximum network reliability with flexible network deployment options.”
The Diamond Technology Reviews are an annual product rating program in which a panel of MSO engineering experts organized by BGR’s editorial team analyzes product applications submitted by the broadband industry’s vendor community. This year the judges included technical executives from Bright House, Charter, Comcast, Cox, Suddenlink, Sunflower Broadband and Time Warner Cable. The full results of the judging will be announced in conjunction with SCTE’s Cable-Tec Expo, being held from October 20-22, 2010 in New Orleans, La. Ciena will be exhibiting at the event and showcasing its CN 5150 in booth #1507.
“Business services and mobile backhaul are key growth areas for MSOs and given the diversity of service requirements, operational environments and deployment architectures they require, this recognition by a panel of MSO engineering experts further underscores the industry’s need for intelligent and cost-effective Carrier Ethernet devices such as CN 5150,” said Steve Alexander, chief technology officer at Ciena.
This year’s recognition by BGR marks the fourth consecutive year that Ciena platforms have been recognized. Last year, Ciena received the highest possible ranking – 5 out of 5 diamonds – for its CN 5305™ Service Aggregation Switch, also a member of the CESD portfolio.
