Collaboration to Deliver Hurley Pro Follows Successful Delivery of the U.S. Open of Surfing
BROOMFIELD, Colo., Sep 16, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) announced today that it is working with MSI Live, Hurley and IMG Action Sports to provide live online and iPhone/iPad streaming of the Hurley Pro to surfing fans from Sept. 12-18. The collaboration comes on the heels of the successful delivery of the 2010 U.S. Open of Surfing in August by these same companies.
From Aug. 3-8, Level 3 leveraged its global content delivery network (CDN) to deliver 85 hours of live online and iPhone/iPad content to surfing fans around the world using adaptive bit rate streaming technologies. The U.S. Open of Surfing is owned by and was produced by IMG Action Sports, a division of IMG Worldwide, a global sports, entertainment and media company.
As a result of the positive response to the live delivery of the U.S. Open of Surfing, the companies are again collaborating to deliver the Hurley Pro from Sept. 12 -18. The event is taking place at California’s San Onofre State Beach – Lower Trestles and is available in real time to Web, iPhone and iPad viewers.
“Surfing fans span the globe, and naturally not everyone can attend the events in person. By streaming the events, we are able to get surfing fans a little closer to the action, whether they are on their iPad in an airport or on their PC in Buenos Aires,” said Evan Slater, vice president of Surf Marketing with Hurley. “To ensure the best experience for our viewers, we rely on Level 3’s robust and scalable live delivery platform and the combined support expertise of the MSI Live and Level 3 teams.”
These events are the latest in a more than two-year collaboration between Level 3 and MSI Live to deliver premier action sports and media events to online and mobile audiences. MSI Live provides production management and support for live HD webcasts. Level 3 and MSI’s collaboration allows the companies to leverage their respective expertise and technologies to help ensure that viewers receive the highest quality experience possible.
“Level 3’s live event delivery services are designed to make the process as simple as possible for content owners by providing end-to-end support strengthened by strategic business partnerships with companies like MSI Live,” said Mark Taylor, vice president of Content and Media at Level 3. “As content owners look to share events like this with their audiences in new ways, Level 3 can provide both the network and the expert guidance needed to ensure seamless event delivery across multiple devices and platforms.”
