CNN Taps Level 3 for Managed Video Network Services at Its Global Headquarters

Level 3 MVNS Installation in Atlanta Allows CNN to Move and Manage Video and Data More Efficiently

BROOMFIELD, Colo., Sep 09, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) today announced it has expanded its relationship with Cable News Network Inc. (CNN) to include Managed Video Network Services (MVNS), a fully managed video delivery, IP and networking solution. Level 3 has installed its MVNS platform into CNN’s global headquarters in Atlanta as well as augmented fiber capacity into CNN’s studios in New York City, allowing the broadcaster to more effectively manage its video and data content.

Level 3’s MVNS offering is a flexible managed video solution for broadcasters that enables point-to-point and point-to-multipoint broadcast video delivery between customer locations via the Level 3 fiber-optic network. The service seamlessly integrates IP and data services from Level 3 while dynamically allocating and prioritizing bandwidth between different services, giving broadcasters maximum flexibility.

The installation and augment represent the latest expansion in a more than 20-year relationship between Level 3 and CNN. In addition to the Vyvx video backhaul services Level 3 has historically provided, Level 3 has brought CNN’s Atlanta headquarters on-net, giving the broadcaster direct access to Level 3’s Tier 1 IP backbone and Vyvx network. Level 3’s fiber augment at Time Warner Center in New York City will serve as a complement to the MVNS installation in Atlanta and expand Level 3’s ability to deliver high-quality media solutions to CNN.

“With the speed at which information travels today, news cycles for broadcasters like CNN have accelerated. As a result, their connectivity needs have grown and their video and data must move faster and more efficiently,” said Andrew Crouch, president of Sales at Level 3. “We developed our MVNS platform to meet the needs of the most demanding broadcast customers, to improve business efficiencies and digital workflows, and to support future innovation in the way content is delivered.”

Features of the installations for CNN include:

  • Video contribution and distribution – The MVNS platform allows transmission of both video and data from a single box, allowing CNN to easily share video and data between locations. It also includes the installation of multiple video interfaces required by CNN and digital access to the Vvyx broadcast video services network.
  • Direct fiber connectivity – Establishing fiber infrastructure between Level 3 and CNN enables reliable, scalable local access solutions to meet CNN’s video and data distribution requirements.
  • High-speed IP – CNN will have up to 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) high-speed Internet access. This service provides CNN with the flexibility to quickly scale to meet bandwidth demand at any given time. Level 3 will also provide these services in CNN’s New York City offices in Time Warner Center.
  • Wavelengths Level 3’s 2.5 Gigabits per second (Gbps) wavelengths transport solutions are designed to support CNN’s business continuity and provide end-to-end data center transport between CNN’s data centers. Level 3 will also provide these services in CNN’s New York offices in Time Warner Center.
