China Mobile Shaanxi Selects Juniper Networks for New Data Center Network

End-to-End Switching, Routing and Security Solutions Extend Juniper’s Footprint with World’s Largest Mobile Operator

SUNNYVALE, Calif., September 7, 2010 — Juniper Networks® (NASDAQ:JNPR, news, filings) today announced that the Shaanxi provincial arm of China Mobile (NYSE: CHL, SEHK: 0941) has upgraded its Internet data center with Juniper’s New Network based on the Junos® operating system to ensure the subscriber experience and improve the economics of the rapidly growing network. The deployment of Juniper Networks’ routers, switches and security solutions provides China Mobile Shaanxi with a high-performance, low-latency and energy-efficient data center fabric with ample scalability and security to meet the expanding bandwidth and service delivery needs of their subscribers.

The rapid rollout of 3G networks is fueling demand for data center-hosted services, including rich mobile multimedia and unified messaging applications, necessitating the build out of a new data center for China Mobile Shaanxi. Implementation of the Juniper solution enables mainland China’s largest mobile provider to leverage Junos in an enterprise data center environment to support the reliable delivery of new mobile applications.

“China Mobile Shaanxi has long been a Juniper customer, but this significant project takes us beyond the established confines of the carrier network and into the data center with them for the first time,” said Mike Marcellin, vice president of product marketing, Infrastructure Products and Junos Ready Software at Juniper Networks. “Automation is vital to implementing security and simplicity across the new network and, with Junos as the single operating system running across the data center infrastructure, China Mobile Shaanxi can streamline operations, eliminate downtime and enable the network to be used at its maximum potential.”

China Mobile Shaanxi has deployed Juniper Networks MX960 Universal Edge Routers for its data center core routing, offering a high level of redundancy with total system capacity of up to 2.6 Tbps. Juniper Networks EX4200 Ethernet Switches, deployed in a Virtual Chassis fabric configuration, provide the data center with a scalable, high-density Gigabit Ethernet switching fabric, while Juniper Networks SRX3600 Services Gateways provide a highly-reliable security solution.

In addition to providing an essential performance boost and superior scalability, the Juniper “3-2-1” data center network architecture delivers very low latency by eliminating the need for an aggregation layer-a primary source of complexity in the network. Junos further reduces complexity through the integration of routing, switching, security and network services in a single operating system.

A commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting in February 2009 on behalf of Juniper Networks demonstrated that through the use of Junos and Juniper switches and routers, companies achieved reductions in operational costs for specific network operations tasks, including planning, provisioning and deployment as well as planned and unplanned network events. Among other top-line results, the study reported a 41 percent reduction in overall network operations costs based on dollar savings across specific task categories.
