July 27, 2010 (TeliaSonera International Carrier)
A key event in the sporting calendar, the European Athletics Championships will be held in Barcelona from 27 July – 1 August 2010, marking its twentieth anniversary with a record number of athletes. TeliaSonera International Carrier’s Media Connect Occasional Use service will be delivering HD coverage of the event to top Swedish broadcaster TV4, based in Stockholm.
TeliaSonera International Carrier secured the deal as it offered a cost effective coherent solution for delivery. Broadcasting from sporting events with limited capacity via one vendor can result in high costs; to avoid this TeliaSonera International Carrier will be innovatively combining transmission platforms and using radiolink to get the HD feeds out of the stadium and on to TeliaSonera’s global network.
Andreas Langell, Production Manager, HDR comments: “This broadcast will ensure that Sweden’s athletics fans will enjoy this prestigious sporting event and keep up to date with how Swedish hopefuls are progressing in the competition. TeliaSonera International Carrier presented us with a cost effective end-to-end solution that will ensure the highest quality HD coverage reaching the Swedish audience. We were impressed by TeliaSonera International Carrier’s work on the Wimbledon tennis tournament and are very confident this will be just as successful.”
Enabling the delivery of HD broadcast quality video content across more than 100 points of presence in 35 countries, TeliaSonera International Carrier’s Media Connect service is an international fibre based media network specifically designed for broadcast and high quality video distribution. Its Media Connect Occasional Use service offers broadcasters and service providers the option to reserve the Media Connect service for short duration broadcast events.
Brendan Ives, Vice President and Head of International Sales, TeliaSonera International Carrier adds: “Unprecedented demand for quality has meant that platforms
used for transporting content from events like this, are under growing pressure – as one of the first network operators to provide an Occasional Use service internationally, this win demonstrates our continued commitment to providing packages that give the upmost quality and value for money. We look forward to working with HDR on this project and further enhancing our portfolio in the sporting space.”
A record 1,626 athletes will be competing in the twentieth European Athletics Championships and all 50 European Athletics Member Federations will be represented by at least one athlete.
