DALLAS, TEXAS – (June 14, 2010) – Xtera Communications, Inc., a leading global provider of optical and IP networking solutions, today announced the acquisition of United Kingdom-based Polariq Ltd., a company specializing in solutions for polarization mode dispersion (PMD). PMD causes random spreading of optical pulses in optical fiber and limits the rate at which data can be transmitted over a fiber.
“PMD and polarization phenomena have been lifelong issues for the optical communications industry,” said Stuart Barnes, founder and chief operating officer of Polariq. “By applying its technology to polarization multiplexing (PM), Polariq’s unique patented solution enables more channels per fiber, effectively increasing the overall capacity.”
“With Polariq’s innovative PM solution, Xtera’s customers will be able to take full advantage of maximizing the capacity of their submarine and terrestrial fiber cable systems,” said Jon Hopper, president and chief executive officer of Xtera. “This technology reinforces our global leadership in providing leading edge high capacity solutions and enables Xtera to deliver efficient 40G and 100G systems.”
