SUNNYVALE, CA, Jun 01, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –i2basque, the publicly financed research and education network of Spain’s Basque region has selected Infinera (NASDAQ:INFN, news, filings) for a high capacity network to provide scientists and researchers in the Basque region the speed, intelligence, and flexibility of an Infinera network. The i2basque network has links with RedIRIS, the Spanish national research network, and the GEANT network, the pan-European research network. The i2basque network is managed by the University of the Basque Country and serves more than 60 technology centers in the region, including universities, research institutes, hospitals and biomedical research centers. i2basque first deployed its network in 2005. i2basque is financed primarily by the Basque regional government. The Basque region is an autonomous region of Spain.
Following the lead of many other European network operators, i2basque decided to move to a next generation network and deploy 100 Gigabit/second (Gb/s) links with Infinera DTN systems. Its aim is to create a robust communication platform to support researchers and e-science networks sharing very large data sets for applications that include Internet analysis, health care and research projects involving advanced research tools such as the Canary Islands’ Gran Canaria Telescope or the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva. Support for the i2basque deployment was provided by system integrator Telindus.
i2basque selected Infinera because the flexibility of the Infinera network is designed to make it quick and easy to deploy any service, from 155 Mbps to 40G, and scaling to 100GbE in the future. Infinera’s bandwidth management and GMPLS-based control plane is engineered to enable the network to automatically configure end-to-end circuits, speeding up the delivery of services while reducing the engineering time required, and increasing the accuracy and reliability of the provisioning process. With switching and grooming at every node in the network, Infinera’s digital bandwidth management provides benefits in network efficiency. In addition, the Infinera DTN’s ability to do digital bandwidth management in an integrated optical DWDM and OTN switching platform is designed to enable the i2Basque network to switch traffic at Layer 1, bypassing intermediate routers at certain points in the network and saving on overall network costs. Infinera’s photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are designed to support high capacity networks with more efficient power consumption per Gigabit and greater reliability than in traditional DWDM networks which are based on discrete optical components.
“Infinera systems meet our needs perfectly, with powerful network management, high fault tolerance, protection, and reduced power consumption. With Infinera technology, we can manage end-to-end circuits and meet the needs of researchers from all over Europe who are using our network today, and with the next generation of 8 Terabit Infinera systems based on 500 Gb/s PICs we will be able to meet their future needs,” said Josu Aramberri, i2basque Network Coordinator.
“i2basque is an innovative, forward-looking technology project of the Basque government and we are very pleased to support i2basque with an Infinera Digital Optical Network,” said Infinera CEO Tom Fallon.
