Level 3 Announces Plans to Install Vyvx VenueNet+ in Louisville Arena
BROOMFIELD, Colo., Jun 07, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) today announced its intent to install Vyvx VenueNet+ in the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky., making it the first college venue in the country to utilize the new service.
VenueNet+ is an advanced platform for Level 3 Vyvx customers specifically designed for sports and event venues. The KFC Yum! Center, scheduled to open in October 2010, will make this technology available to broadcasters during sporting events (the arena is home to University of Louisville men’s and women’s basketball), concerts, family shows, conventions and trade shows.
The VenueNet+ service is part of Level 3’s Vyvx video backhaul offering and has traditionally been available only in major professional sports venues. The service is designed to provide high-definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) digital video services along with HD and SD encoding in VenueNet+ venues.
“We are committed to enabling innovation and high-quality event delivery in the KFC Yum! Center,” said Jim Host, chairman of the Louisville Arena Authority. “By making the VenueNet+ service available, we’re giving all local, regional and national broadcasters the opportunity to subscribe to the highest quality HD transmissions delivered entirely over Level 3’s Vyvx fiber network, allowing production to be done on-site without the need for satellite technology.”
The availability of the VenueNet+ services in college venues comes in response to increased demand in these locations for bandwidth and connectivity to support new technology in event delivery (HD and 3D, for example).
“Today, more college sports content is available for immediate broadcast than ever, and content owners are looking for the best possible means of delivering that content to fans,” said Peter Neill, Senior Vice President of Content Markets at Level 3. “The services we will provide to broadcasters in Louisville – services like HD-ready support and seamless connectivity to the Level 3 network – are the same premium services we offer in professional sports venues across the country. The KFC Yum! Center is the first college venue to implement the technology, and we’re planning several similar upgrades in facilities around the country.”
Since 1994, Vyvx VenueNet services have set a standard for broadcasters’ event delivery. Earlier this year, Level 3 announced an upgrade to its VenueNet offering. Additional features of the new VenueNet+ offering include support for HD video services with native uncompressed HD-SDI customer hand-offs, and support for the next generation of 3 Gigabit per second HD services. The installation of the VenueNet+ service at the KFC Yum! Center is subject to completion of definitive agreements between the parties.
