Project Will Assist Community Emergency Responders
PORTLAND, Maine (June 17, 2010) – FairPoint Communications is partnering with the Scarborough Rotary Club to assist local emergency responders in Scarborough. Last year, local public safety officials alerted the Scarborough Rotary Club that emergency responders were having difficulty properly finding homes due to the lack of visible house numbers.
Through a donation from FairPoint Communications and a grant through Rotary International, the Scarborough Rotary Club has launched a public safety project to place signs in the community to help emergency responders find locations in problem areas of Scarborough. The signs are similar to mile markers on a highway and are being installed by the Scarborough Police Explorers. The house numbers are now easily visible to emergency responders.
FairPoint’s Maine State President Mike Reed said, “Connecting people is at the heart of what we do. The Rotary Club’s signage project helps ensure this critical connection that will help emergency responders to quickly and efficiently locate residents who have called for assistance.”
Rick Murphy, president of the Scarborough Rotary Club, explained that the numbers will also be helpful to anyone visiting the area who is trying to find house numbers.
Officer Joe Giacomantonio, community resource officer for the Town of Scarborough added, “Our ability to find a location that has called for assistance is of critical importance and can be a matter of life or death. We hope the presence of these signs will prompt awareness and every resident in Scarborough will take action to get their house properly numbered for their own safety.”
Officer Giacomantonio indicated that all the signs should be in place soon and the project is scheduled to be completed by July 1, 2010.
