EDGECAST HELPS WORDPRESS.COM AND TECHNORATI MANAGE USER-GENERATED CONTENT EXPLOSION

Site loading and response times improved dramatically in 18 global metropolitan areas

SANTA MONICA, CA – June 1, 2010 — EdgeCast Networks, the world’s fastest and most reliable content delivery network (CDN),today announced that WordPress.com and Technorati, two leaders in the publishing, hosting, and discovery of user generated content, had realized significant gains in site delivery times using the EdgeCast global network.

According to eMarketer, the number of people publishing their own online content – video, blogs, and other social networking participation – will increase almost 50% over the five-year period ending in 2013. And the consumption of that content is growing much more significantly – by some estimates more than 200% annually. Along with this explosive growth comes unprecedented strain on servers and an already-overburdened public internet. This means sites often become very slow or unresponsive, and sometimes impossible to reach for users who are a long distance from the publishing servers.

Automattic (the creators of WordPress.com) and Technorati (the leading blog search engine and the largest social media advertising network) have addressed this challenge by deploying their sites on the EdgeCast CDN. Using the EdgeCast network, WordPress.com can be sure that its millions of bloggers can reach the site quickly regardless of their location. Just as important, WordPress.com bloggers can be sure that their readers will never have trouble accessing content, regardless of how congested the public Internet might become. Compared to serving content from a single location over the public Internet, response times are improved considerably.

“Making blogging accessible to regular people helped make WordPress.com one of the world’s most popular blogging platforms,” said Paul Kim, Automattic’s VP of user growth. “Equally important to the user experience is accessibility in a more literal sense – serving content quickly to readers and making sure our millions of publishers can always access their blogs without worrying about Internet congestion or overloaded servers. EdgeCast has made lightning-fast load times possible for our millions of users around the world.”

Automattic also recently used the EdgeCast network to stream video from WordCamp San Francisco. More than 2500 video streams were delivered, enabling event organizers to stream the proceedings to hundreds of people around the world and ensure excellent video performance regardless of the viewer’s location.

Technorati, the first blog search engine, indexes millions of blog posts in real time and brings them to the surface in seconds. Essential to the site’s value proposition is extraordinary speed. By leveraging the EdgeCast network, Technorati has improved its site loading time and increased user loyalty.

“As we’ve grown, so too has our editorial mission. We not only help readers find the content they are looking for, but we also provide our own original content on a wide range of subjects,” said Shani Higgins, GM of media at Technorati. “When vying for audience at the breakneck pace of the blogosphere, seconds count – sometimes fractions of a second. By shaving seconds off our site’s loading time, EdgeCast has had a considerable impact on our user experience.”

As the world brings devices and content online every day, more traffic is pushed onto an overburdened, congested public internet. The result is a diminished end user experience rife with timed-out web pages, choppy web video, and unreliable web applications. Next-generation delivery networks such as EdgeCast serve files from locations much closer to the end user – no matter where they are in the world – bringing about exceptional improvements in performance and usability.
