Site performance increased by 89 percent with 100 percent availability
SYDNEY, Aust. – June 09, 2010 – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKAM, news, filings), the leader in powering video, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, today announced that it has been appointed exclusive content delivery partner by Ozsale, Australia’s first private online shopping club. Akamai delivers content for Ozsale.com.au through its Dynamic Site Accelerator (DSA) solution. By using this service, Akamai was able to demonstrate a performance improvement of 89 percent during transaction tests across Australia and New Zealand.
Ozsale has 550,000 registered users and conducts regular members-only sales for limited time periods, which attract high volumes of traffic to the site. The online retailer selected Akamai to improve site performance levels and thereby enhance the user experience. In addition, Akamai was chosen to ensure a more consistent shopping experience for Ozsale customers, regardless of their geographic location.
Since leveraging Akamai, Ozsale has seen performance improvement s of 89 percent , which enabled Ozsale’s web traffic to increase from 13 February to 27 March this year, propelling the company to the number one position in the Apparel and Accessories (Shopping and Classifieds) category of Hitwise rankings.
Carl Jackson, chief operating officer of Ozsale said, “Akamai dramatically improved our site performance, while at the same time allowing us to run more high-volume promotions throughout the day. Without Akamai we would not be able to run as many promotions.” Page loading tests were conducted during March 2010 to measure the performance when delivering the Ozsale application via the Akamai network, against delivery via the Ozsale data centre. Evaluated at hourly intervals, Akamai delivered content on average 1.89 times faster than the company’s data centre, across Australia and New Zealand. The Akamai network also provided 100 percent availability during the test period for the region.
Ian Teague, country manager for Australia and New Zealand at Akamai, said, “Running a speedy website and being able to transact at scale is crucial to converting customers in the online retail world. Ozsale has a unique model attracting high volumes of traffic at certain times of the day, and Akamai’s Dynamic Site Accelerator solution enables their website to handle these peaks, avoid downtime and ensure quick transactions. We are committed to further improving our services for e-commerce customers as the online retail market continues to grow.”
The same test was conducted on the Ozsale site in Singapore. Akamai delivered content 3.5 times faster than Ozsale’s data centre in Singapore, with an average improvement of 250 percent. Across Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, Akamai provided a significant improvement for each transaction in the five step test.
When completing the five step transaction test, the Akamai network closed transactions significantly faster than Ozsale’s data centre, finishing 85.93 percent of transactions in under four seconds . By comparison, Ozsale’s data centre completed 50.82 percent in under four seconds .
The Dynamic Site Accelerator features enabled for the Akamai configuration include SureRoute for Performance (Optimised Path Selection), Prefetching (reducing round-trip response delays on non-cacheable content) and Compression (dynamically compressing content between edge regions, and to clients).
