ALBANY, New York. – May 10, 2010 – tw telecom (NASDAQ:TWTC, news, filings), a leading provider of voice, Internet and data networking solutions for businesses in New York’s Capitol Region and across the U.S., today opened its newest co-location facility at the Saratoga Technology + Energy Park® (STEP®) in Malta, N.Y..

Today’s grand opening ceremony was attended by U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko (N.Y. District 21); Michael Uccellini, President and CEO of The United Group of Companies; N.Y. State Assemblyman Tony Jordan, (NY-District 112); Dr. Melodie Mayberry-Stewart, Chief Information Officer, New York State Office for Technology; and Robert Callendar, Vice President, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

“The new tw telecom co-location facility in Malta will enable businesses around the Capitol Region to grow and expand their infrastructure in a completely secure environment,” said Dan Maynard, vice president and general manager for tw telecom in Albany. “Co-location services are now an essential part of data management for most large public and private organizations. This facility offers reliable data storage, cost-effective IT infrastructure and disaster recovery solutions to a growing client-base in the Capitol Region.”

The 13,000 square foot facility features an environmentally-friendly design, industry-leading security features, and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems.

“Congratulations to tw telecom on the opening of its new facility in the Saratoga Technology and Energy Park in Malta, especially in regards to the design which maximizes energy efficiency,” said Congressman Paul Tonko, the former president and CEO of NYSERDA. “This facility will enable tw telecom to help local businesses handle future growth in their information technology needs while providing a positive outcome in terms of energy usage and environmental impact.”

“I’m proud to welcome tw telecom to Saratoga County,” said U.S. Rep. Scott Murphy (N.Y. District 20). “This is a great example of the type of clean-energy, high-tech jobs we’re working to attract to our region. I look forward to continuing to work with tw telecom to make the Capitol Region a world leader in the 21st century innovation economy.”

Technical assistance provided by NYSERDA’s New Construction program helped to identify design features that will significantly reduce electricity load and add to environmental sustainability within the facility. While most facilities use inefficient direct-expansion air cooled HVAC, tw telecom’s new facility will use water-cooled, high efficiency chillers and a water-side economizer that utilizes cold winter air to aid in providing necessary data center cooling. In addition, high efficiency T8 lights have been installed that are controlled by occupancy sensors to ensure the lights are only on when people are in the facility.

tw telecom co-location facilities throughout the country protect customers from the risk of downtime and its business Ethernet and voice services improve the quality of a customer’s network, while reducing its costs.
