SUNNYVALE, CA, Mar 11, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) — Infinera (NASDAQ:INFN, news, filings) has implemented a “Going Green” program to promote environmentally friendly behavior throughout the company. Through recycling programs, reduction in product packaging and the use of recycled materials, Infinera reduced waste by 52% in 2009.
As a result of these efforts, Infinera was named a recipient of the Waste Reduction (WRAP) Award for 2009 by the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle). Infinera is among 250 California businesses and nonprofit organizations recognized with a WRAP award for 2009. According to CalRecycle, the award recipients have diverted more than two million tons of material from local landfills through recycling and resource management programs, leading to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and saving significant sums in operating costs.
The environmental policies implemented at Infinera facilities reflect the broader focus on energy and environmental issues throughout the organization. Infinera optical networking systems are designed to deliver greater energy efficiency than traditional optical systems by leveraging the energy efficiency of Infinera’s photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Today’s PICs are designed to consume approximately 50% less energy per Gigabit-kilometer than traditional discrete optics, and future generations of Infinera PICs are expected to increase the energy savings compared with discrete solutions.
“Energy efficiency and the environment are critical concerns for our company and our customers’ businesses, and that’s built into our corporate priorities,” said Infinera CEO Tom Fallon. “Environmental responsibility is good for the planet and good for Infinera.”
Infinera is also a participant in Pacific Gas and Electric’s PeakChoice program, by which companies voluntarily agree to reduce electricity consumption at peak hours, and the EcoPass program, which provides incentives for employees to use Silicon Valley’s public transit system.
About Infinera Infinera provides Digital Optical Networking systems to telecommunications carriers worldwide. Infinera’s systems are unique in their use of a breakthrough semiconductor technology: the photonic integrated circuit (PIC). Infinera’s systems and PIC technology are designed to provide customers with simpler and more flexible engineering and operations, faster time-to-service, and the ability to rapidly deliver differentiated services without reengineering their optical infrastructure.
