Clearwire to Launch First Metropolitan 4G Network in Malaga, Spain

Consumers and Businesses Will Have Access to 4G Service Several Times Faster Than 3GClearwire to Showcase 4G WiMAX Capabilities During a Press Conference Today at Parque Comercial Malaga Nostrum, Edicifio Galia, MalagaClearwire to Deploy Its First 4G Network Outside the United States

MALAGA, Spain, Jan 08, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Clearwire Communications, LLC, an operating subsidiary of Clearwire Corporation (NASDAQ:CLWR, news, filings) announced today the expansion of its operations for Clearwire’s 4G super fast mobile Internet service throughout the city of Malaga.

Malaga will be the first metropolitan 4G network in Spain and Clearwire’s first 4G network in Europe. Clearwire’s 4G Internet service in Spain, called Instanet(TM), provides consumers and businesses access to the Internet wirelessly, at true broadband speeds – at home, in the office, and on the go anywhere in the 4G Instanet coverage area. Clearwire 4G Instanet service will cover the entire metropolitan area of Malaga and nearly 600,000 people.

The 4G Instanet Difference

The Clearwire 4G Instanet customer experience is similar to that provided by Wi-Fi, but without the short-range limitations of a traditional Internet hotspot. CLEAR uses a wireless 4G technology that differs from Wi-Fi called WiMAX, a standards-based technology which provides service areas measured in miles, not feet. Furthermore, Clearwire 4G Instanet gives average mobile download speeds of 3 to 6 mbps with bursts over 10 mbps.*

As the Internet integrates deeper into daily life, the opportunities to stay connected and be productive are enhanced by CLEAR in numerous ways. For example:

  • A mobile professional no longer needs to seek out Wi-Fi hotspots or be constrained by the speeds and limitations of 3G modem cards;
  • A college student or retiree can now have affordable Internet service to meet their needs at home, on campus and on-the-go;
  • A commuter can now work or access entertainment sites like YouTube on the way to and from home.

For these and many other customers, Clearwire’s simple and innovative pricing provides ultimate flexibility. Instanet 4G rate plans can be purchased with or without a service-contract and do not include usage caps. Home 4G Instanet service plans start at EUR 29.90 a month. Additional savings are available for customers by purchasing a combination of services including 4G Instanet Home and 4G Instanet City. This option provides a 50 percent discount for life. Customers can find further detail on pricing options, business plans and purchase service online at http://www.instanet.es or by calling the toll-free number 1422.

Service can also be purchased by visiting authorized Clearwire 4G Instanet dealers throughout the area including; Carrefour, Media Markt, El Corte Ingles, PC City, Eroski, Urende and The Phone House among others.

Malaga Press Conference, 4G Showcase, Community Support and Advertising

Clearwire will host a press conference beginning at 12:30 p.m. CET followed by a consumer event at Parque Comercial Malaga Nostrum, Edificio Galia, C/Jaen, 9, Malaga. The event will include service demonstrations, giveaways and welcome remarks featuring Barry West, president of Clearwire international and Francisco de la Torre Prados, Mayor of Malaga.

Clearwire is pleased to have the support of Malaga’s local community, business and academic organizations whose support has been integral in bringing Clearwire’s 4G service to Spain. These include: The Club Malaga Valley, a community-based organization promoting innovation in technology, the University of Malaga and the Technology Park of Andalusia including its AT4 testing laboratory.

“Clearwire is excited to bring to Malaga residents, businesses and visitors an Internet experience similar to what they’re used to having at home or the office, anywhere in the metropolitan area or on the go. The commitment of local government along with the region’s status as a technologically-savvy and cultural hub makes Malaga a natural fit,” said Gilberto Sánchez, Managing Director of Clearwire Spain. “Nearly 600,000 Malaga residents will be able to access the Internet immediately and affordably without the disadvantages or delays of traditional ADSL services.”
