5.2 billion mobile broadband subscriptions

The number of mobile broadband subscriptions and volume of mobile data traffic continued to grow during the fourth quarter 2017. According to the latest update of the Ericsson Mobility Report, 200 million mobile broadband subscriptions were added globally, reaching a total of 5.2 billion, and the mobile data traffic grew by 15 percent compared to the previous quarter.

Mobile data services
The growth in mobile data traffic was driven by a rising number of smartphone subscriptions as well as an increasing volume of data per subscription. Smartphone subscriptions now account for 59 percent of all mobile phone subscriptions and 400 million new smartphones were sold during the quarter, which equates to 84 percent of all mobile phones sold during this period.

Overall, the strongest growth in terms of mobile subscriptions during the quarter was observed in China, and Indonesia, and a total of 53 million new mobile subscriptions were registered worldwide.
