Akamai Completes Acquisition Of Nominum

Cambridge, MA | November 27, 2017

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKAM, news, filings) today announced the company has completed its acquisition of Nominum, a provider of DNS-based security solutions supporting many of the world’s leading carriers. On October 11, 2017, Akamai announced an agreement between the parties for Akamai to acquire Nominum in an all-cash transaction.

The combination of the two companies’ technologies and teams is expected to help Akamai serve a larger base of carrier and enterprise customers with more comprehensive security products designed to identify, block, and mitigate cybersecurity threats such as malware, ransomware, phishing, and data exfiltration.

“Nominum provides Akamai important technology and DNS expertise to help protect carriers and enterprises increasingly targeted by attackers attempting to exploit weaknesses and gaps in their cybersecurity defenses,” said Dr. Tom Leighton, CEO of Akamai. “With our acquisition now complete, we’re looking forward to deepening our relationships with our carrier partners as we work together to make the Internet faster and more secure.”

According to Gartner’s Competitive Landscape: Secure Web Gateways by Lawrence Pingree and Ruggero Contu, September 12, 2017, DNS-based blocking and filtering do offer much higher performance and lower latency as a filter mechanism because they not only leverage small UDP packets (designed inherently to be the most optimally performing packets), but also because they do not require proxying and the complete transfer of content via a web connection.”
