MRV Introduces Its Compact Optical Transport Solution for Data Center Interconnect, OD-4-DCI
The OD-4-DCI chassis offers 1.2 Terabit in a modular high-density 1RU form factor, enabling new options for the DCI market
CHATSWORTH, California, May 3, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — MRV Communications™, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVC) (“MRV®”), a provider of innovative network solutions for data center operators, service providers, and enterprises, introduces the OD-4-DCI, its new optical transport platform aimed at the data center interconnect (DCI) market. Part of MRV’s OptiDriver® family of WDM metro transport solutions, the OD-4-DCI enables modular ultra-high density DCI in a compact 1RU form factor with stackable management to offer higher bandwidth point-to-point connections between data centers.

With rapidly changing bandwidth needs, flexibility is valuable. The OptiDriver line cards that are supported by the OD-4-DCI chassis exclusively use pluggable optics, which enables cost-effective, pay-as-you-grow bandwidth capacity expansion for ultimate agility. Additionally, pluggable optics ensure that data center operators only need to invest CapEx as needed, so they can adopt the most current optical innovations. The OD-4-DCI modular design offers outstanding flexibility that supports the same optical line cards as the other OptiDriver chassis from the OD-6 up to the OD-48 models.

“With over 63% annual growth in 2016, Optical DCI remains one of the strongest growth markets in optical networking,” said Tim Doiron, Principal Analyst, ACG Research. “Telecom and Webscale service providers are looking for diverse DCI deployment options. The addition of the MRV OD-4-DCI 1RU product to the OptiDriver family increases service provider flexibility. The use of consistent pluggable optics across the product family improves capital and operational efficiencies while enabling a pay-as-you-go deployment model to match costs with revenue and bandwidth demands.”

“The OD-4 DCI meets the specific business, financial and operating requirements of data center operators as well as those of service providers. By designing the OD-4 DCI as an open and flexible system that can leverage widely available and increasingly competitively priced pluggable optics, the OD-4 DCI offers a highly cost effective and scalable approach for our customers when compared with other systems based on a closed or fixed design,” commented Adam Scheer, Chief Operating Officer for MRV. “Additionally, we have designed the OD-4-DCI to meet data center operators’ expectations for efficient power consumption enabling our customers to realize a very low cost of ownership for this platform.”

Previously, data center operators had to elect either a smaller chassis with fixed optical ports or a larger modular chassis that supports pluggable optical modules. Now using the OptiDriver, data center operators and service providers no longer have this limitation. With MRV’s solution, operators can use the same pluggable modules across the entire OptiDriver product family and realize maximum flexibility to deploy bandwidth when and where needed, with less concern for platform limitations or rack space. All OptiDriver components can be managed with MRV’s Pro-Vision® Life Cycle Service Orchestration (LSO) service management and orchestration software platform.
