The Orville Dam in Northern California is the tallest dam in the world. This month, severe weather threatened the dam’s integrity forcing the evacuation of 180,000 residents just north of Sacramento. As we often run to a crisis, Verizon showed up in full force to support the community.

Our Network team quickly set up a temporary mobile cell tower near the dam to provide communications services to emergency responders and construction crews working to restore the dam and keep the public informed. We are also providing a continuous satellite stream to Sacramento from the dam so they can monitor changes to the dam and progress of repairs in real time.

Verizon team members also rushed to support residents displaced by the emergency. We set up a Wireless Emergency Communications Center to provide device charging ports, internet connectivity and access to news coverage to keep residents informed and connected to emergency services, loved ones and valuable information.

When our communities need us most, Verizon is there for families, loved ones, first responders and so many others providing that connection, that ability to reach out when it really matters. That’s the essential, human, life-saving, service we provide. And that’s why having the most reliable network and an unshakeable commitment to community makes a difference.
