Nokia trials low latency network solution with NTT Labs using Multi-Access Edge Computing

  • Nokia leverages Multi-Access Edge Computing platform together with NTT Labs to cultivate new commercial opportunities in public safety

Tokyo, Japan - Nokia has demonstrated the benefits of low-latency communications and data pre-processing for the IoT era with a trial of its Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) platform in collaboration with NTT Network Technologies Laboratories. The trial paves the way for the development of a comprehensive IoT-based solution for public safety.

The low-latency benefits of MEC-based analytics are particularly applicable in public safety for facial recognition security applications. Visual identity confirmation at public venues via security cameras has grown in importance, but high latency has presented challenges. Furthermore, the sheer volume of data generated by facial recognition processing has also presented other challenges to efficient security management.

By leveraging each other's technologies, Nokia and NTT have been able to counter these issues. Using packet processing for low-latency communications, technologies to effectively utilize network capacity, and correct data for latency, , and Nokia's Multi-Access Edge Computing products, the two companies have been able to successfully:

  • Shorten facial recognition time from monitoring cameras

Facial recognition software located on the carrier network edge can quickly recognize faces in data received from the monitoring cameras and drastically shorten recognition time compared to existing methods where the facial recognition software is located in the cloud.

  • Eliminate data processing overhead in centralized cloud

With the MEC-based solution, facial recognition video analysis is executed at the carrier network edge. Video camera traffic thus be significantly reduced, avoiding data flooding in a centralized cloud.

This trial is an important milestone for us since it sets the prerequisite for achieving 5G low latency interactive communication that has various benefits in the public safety domain. We will demonstrate this technology at Mobile World Congress 2017 with NTT."
