AT&T Network Disaster Recovery (NDR) Team Prepares for the Olympic Games

The Network Disaster Recovery (NDR) team showcased its fleet of network equipment housed at its’ U.K. NDR facility yesterday. The equipment is ready to be deployed in the event of a disaster anywhere in the world, including Rio de Janeiro during the upcoming Olympic Games.

Yesterday, the Network Disaster Recovery (NDR) team displayed its fleet of network equipment at its’ U.K. NDR facility. In the event of a disaster, this team is ready to go anywhere in the world – including Rio de Janeiro during the upcoming Summer Olympics.

The UK NDR facility is important; it acts as the global hub for easy access to AT&T customers across the world. If a network fails in Rio, equipment from our global NDR warehouse in central Europe would restore global network assets.

Planning for and responding to external crises are something that our NDR teams perform without hesitation, and this summer’s Olympics is no exception. We have a team of experts trained in working all types of situations around the world. We practice year-round with drills and exercises that test our equipment and capabilities.

We held our 75th annual NDR exercise this year in Chicago. We hold exercises in various U.S. cities and globally in the U.K., The Netherlands and France. Later this year we will hold a drill in Toronto.  We’ve invested more than $600 million in our global NDR program.

In addition to our NDR preparation efforts, our Global Network Operations Center (GNOC) will monitor the network 24/7 during the upcoming Olympics. The GNOC collects, identifies, and evaluates any high-risk network vulnerabilities in a particular area. This process is used for any high-profile national and international events such as political conventions, high-profile sporting events, hurricane and storm preparations and the Olympics.
