FCC Data Analyzed by SamKnows Shows That EdgeConneX® Localized Infrastructure Improves Internet Performance

Up to 65% Improvement Based on Reduced Latency, Shorter and More Reliable Network Path and More Secure Data Delivery

Herndon, VA – January 11, 2016EdgeConneX®, the leader in infrastructure solutions at the edge of the network, announces today it has published a white paper in conjunction with one of the leading independent performance measurement firms, SamKnows. The report, titled “Defining the Impact of the Edge Using the SamKnows Internet Measurement Platform,” is available online as a complimentary download. Produced by SamKnows, the report uses data from the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Measuring Broadband America (MBA) program. SamKnows’ analysis determines that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) establishing connectivity with a content provider at an EdgeConneX Edge Data Center® (EDC) leads to improved end-user performance, higher customer retention and lower network costs.

SamKnows measured the broadband performance of a leading consumer website and search engine using its network of 6,500 Whiteboxes deployed on behalf of the FCC across the U.S. The objective was to produce an independent study of measurement data published by the FCC to ascertain the real-world benefits of an ISP connecting to content providers at an EdgeConneX location. SamKnows analyzed data in two ways; first, with EdgeConneX infrastructure and second, with infrastructure based on traditional, non-localized infrastructure. The data was associated with two EdgeConneX deployments: Akamai’s hosting of a popular e-commerce site in San Diego, California, and a search engine deploying in Norfolk, Virginia.

The report findings suggest that localizing content within the Edge Data Centers had a significant impact on page load times for end-users in those metro areas. The search engine’s performance improved by 14.6 percent on average, while page requests served by Akamai’s e-commerce site improved by loading 9.2 percent faster. In addition, the data reveals the potential for continued performance enhancement if all site requests were to be served by Akamai (currently, the site uses a mix of Akamai’s Content Delivery Network (CDN) and a centralized location). These improvements of more than 100ms can equate to a 1% improvement in sales for an e-commerce site. The study also notes that fully utilizing the EdgeConneX platform would likely improve web performance by 65 percent.

“The results presented in this report demonstrate a tangible improvement in web browsing performance from two real-world deployments of ISPs connecting to major content providers at EdgeConneX Edge Data Centers,” says Sam Crawford, CEO, SamKnows. “This improvement is driven by reduced latency between the ISP and content provider, enabled by a direct hand-off between the ISP and the content provider at a location closer to the edge of the network.”

“Akamai believes deeply in the power of deploying at the edge, as close to end-users as possible. Our partnership with EdgeConneX allows for deeper connectivity to the end-user network, benefitting our customers and their users,” comments Noam Freedman, Senior Vice President and Chief Network Architect, Akamai Technologies. “The results of the SamKnows report highlight these benefits. An Edge Data Center model enables new opportunities for in-market interconnection that offer a substantial performance improvement over the traditional, centralized interconnection model.”

EdgeConneX specializes in providing purpose-built, power dense and edge of network Edge Data Centers and solutions to enable the fastest delivery of content to consumers.  EdgeConneX has created a new Edge of the Internet by designing and deploying facilities that are strategically positioned nearest to network provider aggregation points, ensuring the lowest latency data delivery, with improved quality of service.

“This independent report reveals several compelling findings for local Internet users, ISPs and content providers,” adds Clint Heiden, Chief Commercial Officer, EdgeConneX. “If your ISP isn’t using EdgeConneX, it’s likely that your Internet is slower and less secure than it needs to be.”
