[Beijing, China, September 19, 2014]: Huawei and China Telecom Corporation Limited Beijing Research Institute today announced that they have jointly completed live network tests of the industry’s first Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) based Virtual Customer Premises Equipment (vCPE). The functionalities and performance of the vCPE in multiple access modes has been tested and met the requirements expected from carrier and enterprises. The test represents the first step towards commercialization of the enterprise vCPE.
Huawei and China Telecom developed the innovative NFV based vCPE solution in order to address the challenges traditional broadband services faced. Traditional broadband services can no longer meet enterprise business development, because new service deployment requires additional hardware and equipment and the process would be lengthy with low flexibility. Meanwhile, deployment of new services makes enterprise network management and policy distribution increasingly complex, resulting in increased operating expenses.. The vCPE solution cloudifies and simplifies enterprise service functions and virtualizes them on carrier networks, only simple access functions are reserved on the enterprise side. This enables carriers to join the enterprise information communications technology (ICT) management market and standardized devices to be deployed with ease, streamlining enterprise branch deployment and reducing operational costs. The highly scalable vCPE solution also facilitates enterprises when planning new services and operating a Pay as You Grow business model.

The successful vCPE test demonstrates the partnership China Telecom and Huawei have developed. The two parties are also exploring the commercialization of NFV and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) on carrier networks. As industry leaders, Huawei and China Telecom will continue to develop new technologies and improve current network functions and architecture. Both parties aim to play a leading role in the commercialization and full popularization of NFV and SDN.
