CenturyLink expands its gigabit service to 16 cities, delivering broadband speeds up to 1 gigabit per second

Service available now to thousands of residential and business customers

August 05, 2014MONROE, La. – CenturyLink, Inc. (NYSE:CTL, news, filings) today announced that symmetrical broadband speeds up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) are available now to residential and business customers in select locations in 16 cities through its ultra-fast fiber network. Thousands of customers can begin enjoying the benefits of gigabit speeds and hundreds of thousands of residential and business customers will also have access to these advanced fiber services within the next 12 months.

CenturyLink is using fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology to provide these ultra-fast broadband speeds to residential and business customers in select locations within ten cities and to business customers in an additional six cities:

Residential and Business

  • Columbia, Mo.
  • Denver
  • Jefferson City, Mo.
  • Las Vegas
  • Minneapolis-St. Paul
  • Omaha
  • Orlando
  • Portland
  • Salt Lake City
  • Seattle
Business

  • Albuquerque, N.M.
  • Colorado Springs, Colo.
  • Phoenix
  • Sioux Falls, S.D.
  • Spokane, Wash.
  • Tucson, Ariz.

Speeds up to 1 Gbps allow users to stream high-definition video content with little to no delays and download movies, songs and TV shows in seconds. Residential customers who have multiple devices connected to one Internet connection in the home will have more than enough capacity and speed to support other uses of broadband such as online gaming, home automation, and increasingly important cloud services.

“While some providers talk about bringing broadband speeds of 1 gigabit per second to their customers in the future, CenturyLink is delivering these speeds today to thousands of residential and business customers, making us one of the fastest broadband providers in these communities,” said Shirish Lal, CenturyLink senior vice president of marketing. “We are providing these cities a reliable network with ultra-fast broadband speeds that help create a foundation for a strong community, attract new businesses and drive economic growth.”

CenturyLink’s 1 Gbps service has been deployed in these 16 cities to meet the needs of businesses of all sizes with secure network capabilities and access to CenturyLink’s private and public cloud offerings and its more than 55 worldwide data centers. One gigabit speeds help businesses increase productivity and efficiency by allowing them to gain instant access to cloud business applications, share multimedia files, stream video content, and back up data in real time. CenturyLink’s symmetrical upload and download fiber speeds of up to 1 Gbps outperform the slower speeds available through many basic business broadband providers, including cable companies.

This multi-city residential and business service offering extends CenturyLink’s 1 Gbps service already available to residential customers in certain parts of Omaha and Las Vegas and select business customers in Salt Lake City.

Residential and business customers in the cities where CenturyLink is offering ultra-fast broadband connections can go to www.centurylink.com/gig to find out if broadband speeds up to 1 Gbps are available to them. If not, they can sign up to receive an email alert when the service becomes available in their neighborhood.
