Technology Demonstrations and Conference Sessions Intended to Help Attendees Better Understand how to Deliver “Near Instant” Web Experiences to Users

CAMBRIDGE, MA – June 23, 2014 – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKAM, news, filings), the leading provider of cloud services for delivering, optimizing and securing online content and business applications, will use Velocity 2014, taking place June 24-26, 2014 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, CA, to showcase techniques for delivering “near instant” web experiences for users. Conference goers can attend a variety of speaking sessions as well as participate in booth demonstrations (Booth 608) of the company’s Ion Web Experience Solutions, Akamai IO, Akamai Mobitest, as well as the role HTTP/2 may play in the future of web performance.

Akamai Thought Leaders Share their Knowledge The Velocity 2014 conference program features a variety of sessions presented by Akamai web experience experts. Sessions in which Akamai is scheduled to participate include:

Advanced Image Compression Techniques: On Tuesday, June 24 at 11:00 a.m. PT, Akamai Performance Solutions Architect Tobias Baldauf will discuss innovative image compression techniques intended to reduce byte size of all image formats to improve the overall user experience and bottom line of websites and applications.

Third Party Performance: Don’t Let Others Get You Down: On Wednesday, June 25 at 11:20 a.m.PT, Guy Podjarny, CTO, Web Experience at Akamai will address how third party components – JS libraries, analytics, trackers, share buttons, ads, etc. – can impact site performance and offer strategies and tactics for keeping this from happening.

UA Strings are Terrible: Adventures in Server-side Device Characterization for Site Performance: On Wednesday, June 25 at 5:00 p.m. PT, Akamai Senior Software Engineer Alec Heller will discuss the current state of device characterization and tips and techniques for better understanding device capabilities to improve the overall user experience.

When URL is not Enough: Rules Driven Delivery: On Thursday, June 26 at 10:20 a.m. PT, Akamai Web Experience CTO Guy Podjarny will highlight how the use of rules can help make URLs smarter, both at origin and on the edge. Attendees will also see firsthand the power of several tools that can help improve site performance.

Chasing Waterfalls – Resource Timing Data in the Wild: On Thursday, June 26 at 5:00 p.m. PT, Akamai Product Architects Mark Holland and Mike McCall will cover how attendees can look at web page load holistically to better understand real-world performance patterns and how leverage Resource Timing data within their own RUM implementations.

Technology Demonstrations In addition to technology demonstrations of Akamai solutions and tools designed to help attendees better understand how the company can help them achieve their web experience goals, visitors to the Akamai booth will also be able to see the web performance potential represented by HTTP/2. Through side-by-side comparisons, with one browser using HTTP/2 and the other using HTTP/1.1, attendees will be able to observe the different behaviors related to each and begin to consider the potential impact on their websites and applications.

Guy Podjarny Book Signing To celebrate the release of Responsive and Fast(2014, O’Reilly), author Guy Podjarny is scheduled to participate in two book signing sessions at the Akamai booth. From 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. on each of Wednesday, June 25 and Thursday, June 26, Podjarny will be on hand to sign copies of his new book and answer questions about why Responsive Web Design and fast performance do not need to be mutually exclusive.
