El Paso, Texas School District to Receive Gigabit Fiber Broadband Services from Conterra

CHARLOTTE, N.C. and EL PASO, Texas, May 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Conterra Broadband Services, a national provider of optical fiber-based Ethernet solutions, has received a multi-year contract to deploy a direct point-to-point optical fiber network to provide Internet access and data, video and Voice over IP (VoIP) transport services for the El Paso Independent School District (“EPISD”). The 100% fiber network will connect all 101 of the district’s schools and administrative facilities with the EPISD Data Center. The School District currently serves approximately 60,000 students and 9,000 teachers/administrators.

Conterra’s dedicated high-speed fiber network services will be partially funded through the federal Universal Service E-Rate program. The wide area network will provide a full 1 Gigabit of bandwidth connectivity to each EPISD facility and will have an aggregate bandwidth capacity of over 100 Gigabits per second.

“The significant improvement in the reliability of our distance learning applications, video quality, speed, and increased bandwidth will enable new educational opportunities,” commented Stephen Stiles, the district’s Chief Technology Officer. Stiles added that “the Conterra network aligns with our commitment to support our curricular initiatives. A robust wide area network is a necessity to support the devices that we want our students using in EPISD classrooms.”

Conterra’s fiber broadband networks support the convergence of integrated data, video and voice services on a single network, allowing the consolidation of multiple service providers to a single source enhancing performance accountability. Conterra monitors, maintains and supports its networks on a 24x7x365 basis and guarantees network performance and reliability.

“Because Conterra is deploying dedicated fiber connections to each individual site, the district will have virtually unlimited bandwidth and growth potential,” remarked Van Snowdon, Conterra’s Executive Vice President.  “The added bandwidth capacity available will prepare EPISD for future innovations in technology.”
