New York, April 16, 2014 – Seattle-based Sabey Data Center Properties, one of the nation’s largest privately-owned multi-tenant data center owners and developers, and AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange), the world’s leading Internet exchange operator, announced today the launch of an AMS-IX New York point-of-presence — the only distributed and neutral Open-IX certified Internet exchange in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area — within Intergate.Manhattan, Sabey’s 1 million-square-foot facility at 375 Pearl Street in Lower Manhattan.

At a launch ceremony led by Eberhard van der Laan, Mayor of the City of Amsterdam, Netherlands, participants welcomed the telecommunications industry’s increasing support for the Open-IX model which is driving the movement to spread the European neutral and distributed model for exchanging traffic between major networks.

The exchange has already signed Netflix, the world’s leading Internet television network, and IX Reach, a global leading provider of wholesale carrier solutions, as the first two customers for AMS-IX New York.  At present, 16 additional customers have applied for a connection to the exchange. The exchange is owned and governed by its members and is operated by AMS-IX USA Inc., a newly formed subsidiary of AMS-IX.

Mayor van der Laan said, “Historically, the Dutch people are global trading leaders. We were the first European settlers to come to this island, and we named it New Amsterdam.  Today, I envision the same business potential here that my ancestors recognized – New York City as a global center of the new Internet economy.”

Open-IX is an initiative started by a group of Internet network operators, content owners and distributors, and other market parties that encourages the development of the neutral and distributed Internet exchange model in the US.  The ultimate objective of Open-IX is to reduce interconnection complexity and associated costs in this country, which have been more complex and higher than in Europe, where the preferred Internet exchange model is more common.

John Sabey, President of Sabey Data Centers, said, “The Open-IX model creates neutral, member-governed exchanges that allow participants to trade traffic.  Open-IX spreads exchange operations across multiple data centers in a market.  This allows users and carriers the ability to connect and peer traffic not only in New York City but across the United States and Europe and to potentially avoid legacy building risks and expense.”

Job Witteman, CEO of AMS-IX, said, “I strongly believe that a distributed exchange model offers the best value by enabling a choice of connectivity options in as many data center locations as makes business sense.  In Amsterdam, the AMS-IX exchange platform is currently distributed over 12 different data centers serving well over 650 IP networks from around the globe, making it the largest Internet exchange in the world.”

Mr. Sabey added, “We are very happy to partner with AMS-IX New York on this important market-changing initiative.  Offering more choice in the New York City market to carriers and customers is good for everyone.”

Intergate.Manhattan represents an exponential expansion to New York City’s computing infrastructure capacity.  The 32-story Intergate.Manhattan is also the most efficient data center in New York City, with brand new infrastructure and state-of-the-art climate control and electrical systems.  The building’s Con Ed substation is on the second and third floors, eliminating a risk from storm surge damage that affected so many buildings in Lower Manhattan during Superstorm Sandy.

Mr. Witteman added, “The opportunity to start neutral, distributed Internet exchanges in the US with the endorsement of the Open-IX community fits our strategy of building Internet exchanges in connectivity hub locations around the world.  We believe the model will bring the North American IP interconnection market tremendous value by decreasing complexity as well as the associated costs.”
