New York, April 16, 2014 – Seattle-based Sabey Data Center Properties, one of the nation’s largest privately-owned multi-tenant data center owners and developers, and AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange), the world’s leading Internet exchange operator, announced today the launch of an AMS-IX New York point-of-presence — the only distributed and neutral Open-IX certified Internet exchange in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area — within Intergate.Manhattan, Sabey’s 1 million-square-foot facility at 375 Pearl Street in Lower Manhattan.
At a launch ceremony led by Eberhard van der Laan, Mayor of the City of Amsterdam, Netherlands, participants welcomed the telecommunications industry’s increasing support for the Open-IX model which is driving the movement to spread the European neutral and distributed model for exchanging traffic between major networks.
The exchange has already signed Netflix, the world’s leading Internet television network, and IX Reach, a global leading provider of wholesale carrier solutions, as the first two customers for AMS-IX New York. At present, 16 additional customers have applied for a connection to the exchange. The exchange is owned and governed by its members and is operated by AMS-IX USA Inc., a newly formed subsidiary of AMS-IX.
Mayor van der Laan said, “Historically, the Dutch people are global trading leaders. We were the first European settlers to come to this island, and we named it New Amsterdam. Today, I envision the same business potential here that my ancestors recognized – New York City as a global center of the new Internet economy.”
Open-IX is an initiative started by a group of Internet network operators, content owners and distributors, and other market parties that encourages the development of the neutral and distributed Internet exchange model in the US. The ultimate objective of Open-IX is to reduce interconnection complexity and associated costs in this country, which have been more complex and higher than in Europe, where the preferred Internet exchange model is more common.
