Alpheus Communications and Telesphere Sign NNI Agreement

Network interfaces give unified communications provider immediate access to Texas market via Alpheus’ high-quality fiber network and scalable Ethernet services

COMPTEL PLUS Fall 2013

HOUSTON & ORLANDO, Fla.–()–Alpheus Communications today announced a network-to-network interface (NNI) withTelesphere, enabling the nation’s largest provider of cloud-based unified communications services enhanced delivery of voice, data and video services to enterprise customers in the lucrative Texas market via Alpheus’ high-quality fiber network.

Telesphere chose Alpheus for its superior network connectivity throughout Texas, including the state’s major metropolitan areas and the Rio Grande Valley. The NNI agreement gives Telesphere immediate access to Alpheus’ fiber network that reaches more than 94,000 Ethernet-qualified locations. That footprint is vital to Telesphere, which provides services to large, multi-office enterprises throughout the country.

Texas’ economic engine remains powerful – according to recent U.S. Census Bureau data, eight of the nation’s 15 fastest-growing cities are in Texas; no other state had more than one city in the top 15 list. This growth fuels the state’s economic success and creates significant business opportunities as Texas continues to expand, and companies relocate to the state, adding to the already high demand for communications and networking services.

“We targeted Texas for an infrastructure investment because it offers a flourishing business climate and many opportunities for growth and expansion. As a Texas-based company, Alpheus has deep knowledge of what it takes to be successful in Texas, and that just adds to the value Alpheus can deliver,” said Telesphere CEO Clark Peterson. “Our Unified Communications-as-a-service offerings require highly reliable bandwidth, and Alpheus provides that with a network that is flexible and scalable enough to quickly deliver the right amount (1 Mbps and upwards) of bandwidth.”

The NNI agreement between Alpheus and Telesphere illustrates the growing trend of enterprises adopting Ethernet service for mission-critical applications, especially for hosted and cloud-based solutions such as the voice, data and video services provided by Telesphere’s unified communications services.

In her December 2012 report, “Analysis of the Wholesale Carrier Ethernet Services Market,” Roopashree Honnachari, Frost & Sullivan Program Manager, Business Communication Services, stated: “As enterprise customers seek a cost-effective solution to converge their voice, data and video applications, Ethernet – with its completeness of benefits, and cost effective, flexible and reliable bandwidth – continues to be a winner in the transport services arena. Cloud networking is beginning to drive demand for wholesale Ethernet services, as cloud companies look to Ethernet instead of the public IP networks to build their cloud networks. Ethernet is attractive for Communications Service Providers (CSPs) because it can be offered economically with a lower price per megabit than any other service.”

“We’re pleased to partner with Telesphere and help them quickly broaden access to Texas with our high-quality network and the numerous data centers and central offices that offer a very robust and diverse network footprint,” said Alpheus CEO Scott Widham. “Alpheus offers the ideal platform for businesses looking to switch to Ethernet for higher speeds, greater reliability and cost-effective bandwidth. We believe that the migration from TDM to Ethernet is an emerging trend, one that is poised for explosive growth in the months ahead.”

Widham will lead a panel discussion on merger-and-acquisition trends in the communications services industry during the COMPTEL PLUS Fall 2013 Convention & Expo in Orlando. The session, entitled “Show Me the Money: Exploring the Market for M&As and Financing for Growth,” will take place Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in Sun Ballroom C, at the Gaylord Palms Resort. The panel of industry insiders and financial market experts will provide insight into leveraging M&A for growth and exit strategies, trends in valuation and what the current market is for communications companies. Panelists also will discuss the factors to consider when selecting the financing arrangement that is best suited to fuel a company’s growth.
