Verizon Wireless to Enhance 4G LTE Network Using Ericsson Small Cell Product

  • Small cells provide a cost effective means to increase LTE network capacity
  • Small cell deployment is a key part of Ericsson’s heterogeneous network strategy
  • Continues Ericsson’s long-standing LTE vendor relationship with Verizon

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC, news, filings) and Verizon Wireless will be partnering to begin the deployment of small cells in the operator’s 4G LTE network this year. Adding small cells will help increase the capacity in Verizon’s 4G LTE network, enabling it to continue providing high quality and reliable mobile broadband service to its customers. The small cell deployment is the latest step in Ericsson’s ongoing cooperation with Verizon as the operator rolls-out its 4G LTE nationwide network.

“Small cells will play a role in the Verizon Wireless strategy to add capacity in high-traffic locations and provide the best customer experience possible on the nation’s largest 4G LTE network,” said Mike Haberman, Verizon Wireless Vice President-Network Support.

Small cell deployment is a key part of Ericsson’s heterogeneous network strategy. By integrating small cells as part of the macro mobile network, operators can cost effectively provide increased network capacity and improved coverage. It also provides full-service transparency in the network, ensuring that VoLTE, eMBMS and similar functionality work seamlessly in the network.

Thomas Norén, Vice President and Head of Product Area, Ericsson, says: “Mobile broadband is now an integral part of our everyday lifestyle where constant connectivity is almost expected. By introducing our integrated small cells into an existing LTE network, we are able to quickly provide mobile operators like Verizon with more reliable and higher capacity networks that will continue to support their customers’ connected lifestyles.”

Ericsson will be providing its micro RRUS (Remote Radio Unit) small cells for Verizon’s 4G LTE network. The micro RRUS is easily integrated into the overall network since it works with any baseband unit part of the RBS 6000 product line. The introduction of Ericsson’s micro RRUS is an industry first deployment.

Later this year, Ericsson will also provide micro RBS 6501 (Radio Base Station) for the Verizon network.  Another industry first, the Ericsson micro RBS 6501 is a multi-standard base station supporting 3GPP 37.104 and provides local-area and medium-range coverage in a heterogeneous network environment. The micro RBS delivers high-capacity coverage in a small form factor.
