M1 modernizes network to ensure better voice, data services in Singapore

Nokia Siemens Networks implements its Liquid Core platform and radio network, refarms GSM 900 MHz frequency to expand operator’s 3G network

Customers of M1, a leading full-service provider of mobile and fixed communications in Singapore, will soon enjoy enhanced voice and data services with improved network connectivity and coverage. To achieve this, M1 has commissioned Nokia Siemens Networks to strengthen its voice core network and expand its 3G network by using its service expertise, implementing its Liquid Core* and radio networks, and refarming the GSM 900 MHz band.

“With this latest investment, our customers can look forward to better mobile experience, and indoor and outdoor coverage. Our network resiliency will be further enhanced with this modernization,” said Patrick Scodeller, Chief Operating Officer at M1.

“A vital business mantra for all operators is to provide the best service experience to their customers, but what is equally vital is doing so cost efficiently,” said Paul Tyler, head of Asia Pacific, Nokia Siemens Networks. “We have well understood the exact requirements of M1 and will provide our advanced Liquid Core platform and refarming service, which are cost efficient, and help increase revenue for the operator.”

Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide its Single RAN (radio access network)**, which is based on its award-winning, energy-efficient Flexi Multiradio Base Station, coupled with its Multicontroller RNC and Liquid Radio software. As part of the Liquid Core portfolio, the company will also provide its ATCA-based open Mobile Switching Center Server (MSS) and open Media Gateway (MGW) to ensure the resiliency and operational efficiency of the operator’s voice core network. This modernization will ensure an all-IP network for M1.

In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide its Subscriber Data Management Platform*** (SDM) including New Technology Home Location Register (NT-HLR) and One-NDS subscriber data management system for a centralized database repository independent of the application used.

The company will also provide a range of services to M1 such as network implementation, network optimization, and a full set of care services including hardware and software maintenance and competence development.

Notes:
* Part of Nokia Siemens Networks’ Liquid Net, Liquid Core decouples hardware and software and adds intelligent software applications that enable the core network to adapt and optimize to meet the fluid needs of subscribers, the services they use and the operational state of the network itself.

Through core virtualization, any core software application can run on COTS ATCA and ultimately other generic multi-purpose hardware. Costs are reduced by re-using existing hardware. In the core domain, the network element footprint can be reduced by 80% and energy use by up to 65%, with future improvements expected. Furthermore, intelligent broadband management delivers the best customer experience at the lowest cost, end-to-end across all network domains.

Nokia Siemens Networks has 180 Open Core System customers worldwide with over 80 live core networks. And more than 500 operators serving 1.8 billion subscribers have selected the Nokia Siemens Networks core products, which are now available on the Liquid Core platform. In 2011, Nokia Siemens Networks’ Open Core System won the category of ‘Best LTE Core Network Product’ at the LTE North America Awards.

** Nokia Siemens Networks’ Single RAN simplifies mobile network architecture, rollouts, and operations by providing multiradio networks with a common hardware platform. It has an industry- leading track record in refarming GSM frequencies to new efficient technologies such as HSPA+ and LTE using the same radio frequency hardware. Single RAN consists of the award-winning, multi-technology, compact, modular and weatherproof Flexi Multiradio Base Station and the multi-technology Multicontroller RNC/BSC platform combined with common IP transport and innovative software to optimize the use of radio spectrum.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ Single RAN has been adopted by over 230 operators worldwide and has over 80 re-farming references today, including the world’s first WCDMA refarming network implementation in 2007.

*** Nokia Siemens Networks’ SDM, including One-NDS and New Technology Home Location Register (NT-HLR), is a central entity for mobile communication networks. It hosts all relevant subscriber information as well as network and mobility application information needed to allow a completely seamless communication in GSM, 3G and LTE networks worldwide. SDM architecture is based on the concept of separating application service logic (dataless NT HLR front end) and application data (One-NDS). Because of this architecture, the solution scales flexibly and is highly reliable, providing new value added functionalities for operators.
