Committee on Small Business Invites Cbeyond’s Weber to Congressional Cyber-Security Panel

ATLANTA, March 18, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Cbeyond Inc. (NASDAQ:CBEY, news, filings), the technology ally to small and mid-sized businesses, today announced that senior vice president and general counsel William H. Weber will provide expert witness Thursday Mar 21 before the Subcommittee on Healthcare and Technology of the Committee on Small Business, at a hearing titled ‘Protecting Small Businesses Against Emerging and Complex Cyber-Attacks.’

Scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. in Room 2360 of the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington D.C., the hearing will examine the increased volume and complexity of cyber-attacks as it affects emerging technologies – such as cloud computing and mobile technology – utilized by small businesses.

Weber will brief the committee on ways small businesses are using cloud technology to grow and compete, and on how Cbeyond helps protect its customers from emerging cyber-security threats. Weber will also provide Committee members with policy recommendations designed to help educate and secure small businesses against attacks from cyber-criminals.

“Small and medium businesses are increasingly looking to the cloud to help them grow, and it’s a great idea for Chairman Graves to hold this hearing.  I look forward to the opportunity to help the subcommittee members understand both the incredible security benefits the cloud can provide as well as the cyber-security issues that most impact small and medium businesses,” said Cbeyond’s Weber.

According to subcommittee Chairman and U.S. Representative Sam Graves, Internet technology has the potential to transform the way small businesses operate and compete in the 21st Century.  However, as new technologies are deployed, additional opportunities for cyber-criminals exist to attack firms and steal their valuable information. As stated in an April 2012 study by Symantec, nearly 20 percent of all cyber-attacks were directed to small businesses with less than 250 employees. The statistics also show that nearly 60 percent of small businesses will close within six months after a cyber-attack.

Other expert witnesses invited to the hearing include representatives from CompTIA, McAfee and Rackspace.
