Nokia Siemens Networks, Panasonic Mobile Communications selected by NTT DOCOMO for LTE-A

Tokyo, Japan – February 21, 2013

LTE-A and small cell radio access development to be completed by 2015 with initial equipment capacity of 300 Mbps

Nokia Siemens Networks and Panasonic Mobile Communications Co. Ltd., a Panasonic group company, have been selected by NTT DOCOMO to develop next generation mobile broadband network architecture for LTE-A (long term evolution-advanced). As part of a multi-year agreement, the two companies will provide NTT DOCOMO with high-capacity base stations optimized for the requirements of LTE-A. These base stations will ensure initial equipment capacity of 300 Mbps (megabits per second) in the network and enable new cloudbased architecture and services. In addition, the two vendors will provide Remote Radio Head (RRH) to roll out small cells to enhance the coverage and capacity of the LTE-A network.

“Nokia Siemens Networks, in collaboration with Panasonic Mobile Communications, is committed to providing a next- generation mobile broadband network to NTT DOCOMO,” said JP Takala, head of Japan Region, Nokia Siemens Networks. “As the world’s specialist in mobile broadband, our focus on innovation and quality will enable NTT DOCOMO to build LTE-A network. With this, NTT DOCOMO will be able to address ever-increasing subscriber needs for higher bandwidth and better quality of services in Japan, one of the most advanced mobile markets in the world.”

“We are very pleased to extend our collaboration with Nokia Siemens Networks and use both companies’ expertise to help NTT DOCOMO launch next-generation mobile broadband services,” said Masamichi Haruna, Head of Networks Business Unit, Panasonic Mobile Communications. “Our collaboration started in 2007 to deliver LTE network infrastructure to DOCOMO, and enabled the operator to launch LTE commercial services in 2010.”

Nokia Siemens Networks and Panasonic Mobile Communications will develop, and deliver base station hardware and software based on Nokia Siemens Networks’ Liquid Radio architecture. This will provide higher capacity and throughputs with centralized and coordinated processing for heterogeneous networks (HetNet). In addition, the two vendors will deliver RRH for small cells rollout to enhance the coverage and capacity of the LTE-A network.
